VLC Segfaults

Does anyone else have an issue with vlc segfaulting? I run it and it shows up for about a second, then goes away. I have rebuilt it from ABS and it does the same thing. Here is the output from a command line:

[mrunion@sweetchuck ~]$ vlc

I think I will try the version from AUR, but in the meantime can anyone duplicate this? I update every day and it ran fine the day before the openjdk was released. I have NOT tried rolling back any packages yet, but this is the "line in the sand" where it may have stopped.

Re: VLC Segfaults

Oh, if I run with NO interface (using cvlc) it runs just fine. Anyone else?

Re: VLC Segfaults

vlc-git from AUR built and installed fine. It ran fine as well. I'll just be patient until a new vlc is out.

Re: VLC Segfaults

No big deal... I think. Remove or rename .config/vlc folder and I think your problem will be solved.

Re: VLC Segfaults

VLC is notoriously sensitive to config file breakage and/or format changes. "--reset-config" is the first thing to try if it crashes or does something weird.

Re: VLC Segfaults

I've got exactly the same problem. At the end, now I'm using smplayer.

Re: VLC Segfaults

I have the same probem, I noticed it today.
I tried downgrading from vlc-0.9.8a-5 to vlc-0.9.8a-4, without success.
I also tried "vlc --reset-config" but it doesn't work either.

Did you try to remove or rename .config/vlc?

Re: VLC Segfaults

vlc --reset-config worked for me, BTW.

Re: VLC Segfaults

vlc --reset-config worked here too.  Segfaults again when I set a skin and restart.

Re: VLC Segfaults

I've reseted config. But when I've added services to playlist (HAL, Internet Radio) vlc has crashed again

Re: VLC Segfaults

I've reseted config, both with vlc --reset-config and by deleting ~/.config/vlc. Vlc consistently segfaults on seek in several files.
(btw, mplayer works fine on the same files). I also get those

Xlib: extension "Generic Event Extension" missing on display ":0.0".

messages when starting vlc and before segfaulting.

Re: VLC Segfaults

Using vlc-git (along with x264-git, ffmpeg-svn) fixes this vlc problem for me. Also, this seems to be unrelated to the Xlib message, which is a known issue:

Re: VLC Segfaults

With vlc from the standard repos, I was segfaulting constantly
Example: vlc[8999]: segfault at 7f323bc33ff8 ip 00007f324b154d6c sp 00007f323bc33fe0 error 6 in libc-2.9.so[7f324b0e0000+14a000]

vlc-git seems to have fixed this problem as well as resolving an issue with VLC Xvideo output window not integrating into the interface

Re: VLC Segfaults

I have the same problem, but only when there are subtitles in srt files. I didn't try any other kind of subtitle (mkv, etc). vlc crashes with a segmentation fault as soon as the first subtitle of the movie is displayed. I tried vlc, vlc-git, vlc-embeddedvideo and it doesn't change anything. Deleting the vlc config folder or launching vlc with "--reset-config" doesn't work neither.

Maybe something with the subtitles configuration ?

Re: VLC Segfaults

jaymz, are you using x264-git and ffmpeg-svn and compiling vlc-git against them? Because that fixed the issue for me...

I've just installed them and recompiled vlc-git and the problem is still there.

Re: VLC Segfaults

Same problem here. And it's definitively a subtitle thing because when I disable them the video is working fine! 2 weeks ago exactly the same video worked fine!

Another thing: It only crashes when I load the subtitles via a .srt file. Otherwise the video works!

Yes! This fixed my subtitle issues with vlc also. I can get rid of smplayer now. big_smile
