Mouse Synaptic problem

Hi everybody,

I'm new to arch, but not to Linux, I work with ubuntu, puppy, and installed gentoo. Every time I have problems with Xorg, never the same. This time I was able to enable keyboard and the center knob of my laptop by starting hal. But the touchpad synaptic I think is not working and the mouse bouttons don't work also. I checked in the wiki and they said about disabling the hotplug. What's that and how to do that?

I have a dell latitude.

Re: Mouse Synaptic problem

Try taking a look at this thread, in particular this post:

http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php? … 89#p456689

Basically, all (or most) of the Xorg options that you have for the synaptics touchpad in xorg.conf needs to be taken out of xorg.conf and placed in the corresponding .fdi file for HAL to recognize your touchpad as a synaptics touchpad (this might require you to explicitly say which device node the touchpad is also)

Hope this helps some.

Re: Mouse Synaptic problem

I added this to xorg.conf

Section "ServerFlags"
       Option "AutoAddDevices" "False"
EndSection

And it worked. If I have to plug a external mouse or keyboard will it work also?
If not I will spend more time to understand hal.

Thanks for the reply.

Re: Mouse Synaptic problem

If you have hotplugging turned of as you do now, you will most likely have to add another Devices section in your xorg.conf with a different identifier, aka

Section "InputDevice"
    Identifier "Mouse1"
    Driver "mouse"
    Option "Protocol" "auto"
Option "Device" "/dev/node/ofexternalmouse" # /dev node of your external mouse (USB and such)
    Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5 6 7"
EndSection

Also towards the top of your xorg.conf, you'll want to add the following line:

InputDevice    "Mouse1" "SendCoreEvents"

to the corresponding section in the SeverLayout section of your xorg.conf

Section "ServerLayout"
    Identifier "X.org Configured"
    Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0
    InputDevice "Mouse0" "CorePointer"
    # Add the line somewhere here
    InputDevice "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard"
EndSection

So your touchpad still remains the primary mouse device, with your external mouse having secondary (but still full) control of the mouse pointer.
