bittorrent client

Hello guys.

I'm sure you're aware when you have a big list of anime and your friends have one even bigger, you feel the need for a 90 GB animation update. big_smile The point is that I need a good bittorrent client for this noble task (you know, you've to fight the boredom with all available resources!), but I'm sort of lost of which should I pick. I've tried transmission (rock solid, but is slow as hell), deluge (nitro-powered client, but is too unstable) and rtorrent (good, but kinda unfriendly). The last thing I've done is to go against my gtk+ and oss spirit and resigned to use the wine+utorrent combo, which gives me the best results (however, is not the idea).

Any suggestions for this poor guy?. Thanks in advance.

p.s. I'm aware that my english sucks, that's why I watch a lot of eng-subbed anime. I improve my jp and my en at the same time big_smile

well, no. But judging from the name, does it has kde dependencies?.

Re: bittorrent client

Yes, it depends on KDE; but htere is no problem using it with other DEs of course. KTorrent is one of the best clients out there.

Re: bittorrent client

thanks WernerL and Pierre, but... there is no fat free client out there? big_smile  --- obviously, keeping a little bit of usability. (I've nothing against rtorrent, but when you've 30 downloads running, it gets quite hard to discover 'where you are' on the UI)

Re: bittorrent client

rtorrent is the best torrent client available. It is incredibly friendly once you got it set up properly, which isn't even hard. It's just a matter of reading comprehension.

Re: bittorrent client

I first would have suggested qbittorrent, a very good qt bittorrent similiar to transmission, but since you prefer gtk+...
But what is your problem with transmission, what do you mean by slow? I used it before i found qbittorrent (I am a qt guy, you know wink ), but ditched it because suddenly it would access the hard drive constantly when I loaded torrents for big files like dvd images. Do you have the same problem?

EDIT: The nice thing with qbittorrent is that even while I am downloading at full speed my brother won't complain to me anymore because of a high ping in WoW as he did before when I used transmission. Of course you have to set the bandwith limitations in the client settings right to not choke your connection out of stupidity.

Re: bittorrent client

The command line aria2 is very light, and it does a whole bunch of other things.

Btw, I love clients with web interface. That may be an option for you - if rtorrent has got it? :-)

Re: bittorrent client

@scj: I'm not doubting about the rtorrent's capabilities, it's just too unfriendly for me. I've used it a lot, but I cant get used to it.

@signor_rossi: everytime I started transmission I got very good speeds, however as the time passes this speed started suddenly to decrease. As far as I know, there is a bug --that should be solved on 1.50-- which messes the tracker's notification frequency (or update? -- I forgot the bittorrent term for this). About the file access, I've downloaded DVD images too and my hdd is behaving correctly.

@skottish: I've used aria to download files, but not torrents. How does it work? I mean, aria looks in certain way to a normal download utility. If I execute it without any parameters, does it resume its queued tasks? or do I need to run it everytime with the-not-so-friendly bunch of parameters?

In short, I have no idea. I've only had two or three occurrences in my life where other protocols weren't better for me. I know almost nothing about Torrent.

Re: bittorrent client

Aria is what I use for torrents, but only because I don't use torrents that often. You will probably be better off with another client, unless you feel like writing a whole ton of custom scripts to make it suitable for your uses, and here's why:

Aria does not automatically save uncompleted downloads, you need to call it with the -c argument to continue a previous download. In order to seed a file, you need to use the --bt-seed-unverified option for every torrent every time. The other command line options will be similarly annoying if you plan on using it regularly to download and seed a lot of files.

Re: bittorrent client

the Deluge bit torrent client has made quite a few improvements in the last month. In my opinion is the most versitile and stable client for linux right now (as far a gui's go, rtorrent is great for command line).

Re: bittorrent client

I guess that's not right. I've using deluge for a long time, and it has nothing to do with a 90 gb anime list. It simply hangs.

Frontends for rtorrent: http://libtorrent.rakshasa.no/wiki/UtilsList - might be of interest here.

I haven't tried any of them, btw.

Re: bittorrent client

the gui's (or whatever you wanna call'em) are quite nice, in particular that one whose name was wtorrent (correct me if I'm wrong). The screenies were very cool, but... I almost suffered a cardiac arrest when I realized the need to set a LAMP in order to install it...  (does it worth the space? big_smile)

but I repeat myself. **too ugly** smile **too unreadable**... It would be easier for me if the UI had a few colors.

p.s. But I know it is one of the best bittorrent clients out there.

ktorrent is a great application, but it requires the obscenely bloated KDE.  You're an Arch linux user, so sack up, grow some balls, and use rtorrent.

That's the reason someone made a nice qt torrent client only, namely qbittorrent, which is very similar to transmission and works well. smile
I forgot to mention that transmission brings also a command line client only (gui and cli are separated in transmission-cli and transmission-gtk), which already includes a simple web interface that does not need LAMP! What is the point of the lightweight rtorrent when its' web frontends need all that other software stack? And command line only for torrents with a lot of files and priorities is way to cumbersome.
I don't know if the transmission-cli web interface already includes a details view now where you can give certain files priority though, since I used it on Ubuntu some time ago when it didn't have such a view, but I saw that it was planned then.
