stand-alone qt app theme and colours messed up (qtconfig problems)

Hi, I've having trouble with all apps that don't follow kde's theme settings. Things like vlc, psi, qtconfig, qtscrobbler etc etc.

When I open up qtconfig, I can change my gui style to oxygen (from default plastique) and click save, and then qtconfig looks like oxygen (albeit still almost unreadable colours). I quit, reload it, and it is back to plastique.

Interestingly, when I load up the old qt3 qtconfig it has the same problem.

This also occurs on a new user, but the colour scheme is not messed up.

Any ideas?
