help me with firestarter

I was going to play with firestarter but it said I had to be root to use it.
So I tried to open it from terminal as root and got this:

(firestarter:16255): GnomeUI-WARNING **: While connecting to session manager:
None of the authentication protocols specified are supported.

Any idea?

I have a similar priblem with gparted.
I'm using gnome if that helps.

Appreciate any help!
