ettercap - no NIC & GTK+ failed to initialize. Is X running? [SOLVED]

Hi All,

Sorry if this has been posted a million times before!

Im new to linux and have managed to stumble my way through installation, config etc, but i've got stuck with ettercap.

When i run ettercap as a non root user i can't select an interface. So i thought i would run it as root but the gui wont even load.

below is the output from when I ran ettercap as root.

If it helps im running the latest version of arch and kde.

Can someone point me in the right direction to fix this?

Can you run any other app as root? I mean, is it only ettercap that fails to start as root or is it some general problem?
On my machine it works flawlessly when I run it via sudo.

it look like its more than just ettercap

[user@arch ~]$ su
Password:
bash-3.2# konqueror
No protocol specified
konqueror: cannot connect to X server :0.0

but runs from cli as non su user

sudo ettercap-gtk --gtk worked but su to root didnt. to me thats strange but its working :-)
