X hangs during startup

I am re-installing Arch 64 bit, the old install was getting plastered with all sorts of things and in the end it broke. So as there was nothing reallly important on it, I decided to reinstall. The first install had been pretty painless. Now I have started on a clean hardirve for the second time.

But now I simply cannot get X to work, had no problems on the last install with identical hardware - I might have a new monitor when thinking about it, but this had also worked on my previous install even if I did not install with it.

I have searched and tried to my wits end and now I ask for your help.:|

When running :

X -config /etc/X11/xorg.conf

the screeen goes black instanously but after 1-1½ minutes I get the Nvidia logo, in a nice 1680x1050 resolution but it's flickering, and then... nothing. I cannot change VC and ctrl-alt-bksp doesn't do anything. I have noticed that flicking numlock gets slower and slower the longer the Logo sits there, and in the end I cant even do that. (I have tried without the Logo adding Option "NoLogo" "true" but it seems to be the same  - no flickering screen though.) In the end only the reboot button works.

I haven't really added much in the way of packages, only what is in the beginners guide up untill the point of setting up X + samba to get the files to a network share to post here. + the package ACPI as there was some mention about it in the log, and I seemed to remember having and ACPI deamon on the old setup - but I get and error when booting if it's added to the daemons list in rc.conf. (and no change to the X startup). I have to say though that I get some strange ACPI errors during boot.

Using the propriety Nvidia driver(and I think I need that). During the first of the two installs I have tried since a week ago I had LXDE running, but with the VESA driver, and in 800x600 no matter the modelines and it was fuzzy, very fuzzy.


This is my xorg.conf - generated by  : nvidia-xconfig (I have tried both hwd and Xorg -configure and the build in one that I can't remember the name of. THis one seems to be best. Only addition I made was the "ServerFlags" section, but I don't recall as it did any real difference.

I am aware that "Type1" should have been commented out from the xorg.conf - just tried that but didn't post the newer log as it would have required an extra couple of reboots - it made no visible change.

all right tried to leave it all day while at work, and after 8 hours a lot more was initialised. I believe it's a performance issue with the 180.22 driver. I think I'll wait for 180.29 (the newest stable on the nvidia site) and see if it persists.

Type 1 and other messages whith WW behind just some warnings. It can't be your problem. It's more likely your nvidia driver. Try with nv (open source) in place of nvidia. If it works - the problem is in nvidia driver.

I have been away for the weekend will try to night. and I also figure that it's the 180.22 driver that messes up things. (Might just be what gave the old install the final push as well).

I knew about the "type 1" and other warnings thats why I didn't want to go through geting new logs to post. I have actually tried with a .conf file that included nothing but the "Device" specifying the Nvidia driver and it was the same.

One other suggestion: comment out the composite extension part (or set it to disable) and try again. I have the same issues (on an ATI though)
It freezes when I have that enabled since (AFAIK) composite is enabled by default in latest Xorg and you can(and most likely will) get configuration conflicts.

Allright, will try that sounds like a good plan. But if it is enabled by default would I not need explicitly disable composite? by changing the current line to

Option "Composite" "Disable"

as i think commenting it out would just let Xorg enable it per default. Also considering that I have tried with an absolutely blank xorg.conf, except the "Device" section.

Just saw that the driver has been updated in the repo, so i'll try that first. Then changing the composite option, and if that fails trying the NV driver, and it that doesnt work getting a hammer, followed by "Honey I need to buy a new computer"(hmmm might try that in a differnt order:D).

As expected the NV driver solved it.

I dont know whats happening with the Nvidia driver 180.29-3 was in Extra and 180.35 (I think it was) was in Testing - then when I got home it was back to 180.22 in extra and 180.29-3 was in testing marked as outdated - maybe its the new xorg thing that is brewing.

Anyway writing this in LXDE but with a US keylayout - I have no Xorg.conf file which is kind of nice and I did try to set the keyboard layout as the only thing in an xorg.conf file but it either didnt matter or stopped X from starting, so now I will hunt a solution for that.
