Printer, KDE 4.2, Cups

I just reinstalled from the 2009.02 ISO and tried KDE4.2 for the first time -- love it, but there is a snatch; my printer just won't work. It did whilst I had Gnome installed, however. So what to do? Where to look for errors?

* My user is in lp group
* Printer installed ok in system-config-printer-kde
* Cups installed and running (obviously)

No test page was printed, nor any errormessages - just ... nothing. Same as for Okular and OpenOffice. Even tried kdesu kwrite and print from there just in case; same result - nothing.

Oh. Yes, both cables are in place; power and usb. Even tried different usb-ports in case the ususal somehow automagically stopped working wink

No idea - how do I check printjobs @ localhost? Command line is no problemo - I just need some directions on the proper commands wink

Re: Printer, KDE 4.2, Cups

you type above command into your browser.

there's also an article on archwiki on how to troubleshoot printer issues which is pretty good roll

archwiki wrote:

The best way to get printing working is to set 'LogLevel' in '/etc/cups/cupsd.conf' to:

LogLevel debug

And then viewing the output from '/var/log/cups/error_log' like this:

# tail -n 100 -f /var/log/cups/error_log

The characters at the left of the output stands for:

D = Debug
E = Error
I = Information
etc...

These files may also prove useful.

/var/log/cups/page_log 'spits out a new entry each time a print is successful.'
/var/log/cups/access_log 'lists all cupsd http1.1 server activity'

Seems there is an issue on localhost as far as I can understand ...

I get to see Cups 1.3.9 web interface - also a rather long list of jobs I've tried to start yesterday and today ...

At 'Printers'-tab I see the following: Photosmart_C3100_series (Default Printer) "/usr/lib/cups/filter/foomatic-rip failed"

Re: Printer, KDE 4.2, Cups

I had the same problem with printing in KDE 4.2 and I resolved it by firering up 'system-config-printer-kde' as root, removing all printers and installing them again with that configuration tool.

It worked! Thanks!!

... but only by checking localhost in browser -- the printer won't start until I've manually restarted the job. However - the scanner works flawlessly (it's a multifuntion printer). Since, as mentioned earlier, it has worked before - I believe there is some configuration not ok wink

Update: Simple text files is allowed to restart - if an image is embedded (ie from OpenOffice) the processing seems to take forever -- as in 15 mins+ for a 2.5 mb file. All this according to http://localhost:631/jobs/
