Yes, I checked alsamixer and amixer and I installed gnome-alsamixer (I've been googling 'till my head hurts).
The two things that really jump out at me are: in audacity when I plug and unplug the mic the vumeter doesn't react; and, I'm seeing three different names for my soundcard depending on what tool I'm using (aplay -l=Conexant, lspci | grep -i audio=Azalia, alsamixer=conexant cx20561 (hermosa) but when I google azalia conexant hermosa; I get no matches. That's just weird.
I'm going to check Guitar Center for cheap usb options for recording (I hate spending money).
I think Lisp is funny, double semi-colons and unmatched parentheses crack me up.
