JRE - very ugly applet fonts

Here's what I mean:

I mean they're not THAT bad, but still awful. I've tried editing /opt/java/jre/lib/fontconfig.properties (copied it from fontconfig.properties.src), but it seems it has absolutely no effect. Is it possible to change the font or am I stuck with these?

And yeah, openjdk6 fonts are even uglier.. neutral

They look pretty standard to me. It is what is used for the metal look and feel in my Java based apps.

JRE installs its fonts in the /opt/java/jre/lib/fonts folder, I never succeeded in using other font directories, based on some information here:
