can't start applications in kde4.2

hi,
quite big problem here:

i can't start any application which has a window.
it happens some seconds after i login to kde. when kde starts, i'm able to start any application for some time, but without any cause, after a few moments i can't.
i only get a jumping symbol at my cursor and an entry in the taskbar, but nothing visible happens.

strange thing is, the applications i want to start get started, as processes with their names are running. but as said, i get no window.
it's a kde-only problem, as everything, even kde apps, work fine with openbox. i'm running kde4.2 from testing.

some things i noticed:
- some processes ("krunner_lock","true") become zombies after some time
- when i start the application as root, everything works. same with guest-user.

console output:

[maddien@BlackBOX ~]$ dolphin
Xlib: extension "Generic Event Extension" missing on display ":0.0".
Xlib: extension "Generic Event Extension" missing on display ":0.0".
<unknown program name>(13916)/: Communication problem with "dolphin" , it probably crashed.
Error message was: "org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply" : " "Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken." "

i searched for the first error, and as it seems it's harmless.

can anybody help me? its not really comfortable

thanks!

maddien

Re: can't start applications in kde4.2

Did you start the hal daemon? Do you use kdm to login?

yes, hald is running, and yes, i use kdm.

i tried to restart HAL, but somehow it fails (stopping and starting)
how can i list all running daemons?

Re: can't start applications in kde4.2

you got dbus in your rc.conf daemon array as well? If so, comment it out and reboot.

Re: can't start applications in kde4.2

no, only got hal in the array:

DAEMONS=(@kdm @cpufreq hal dhcdbd @networkmanager !fam !syslog-ng !network !netfs @alsa @samba)

btw:
i restarted my machine, and as kde started it told me something like "problem with your installation: no write access to ~/.ICEauthority - cannot start ksmserver" and aborted.
well, ICEauthority was owned by root, i changed it back and kde started normally.

could it be that my problem is related to it, meaning that some file has the wrong permissions?

Re: can't start applications in kde4.2

i think it's related to my user, since with another user or root everything works fine.

so i will delete my account and create a new one, the configs needed a cleanup anyway smile

Re: can't start applications in kde4.2

you use testing repo?

try downgrading to "core/netcfg" and "core/wpa_supplicant", maybe additionally to nvidia 180.29.

it worked for me smile
