Hi... today I tried to update to the new hplip.
Got a bunch of messages saying
already in filesystem.
what's the trick to getting hplip updated, ideally retaining the working status.
thanks!

You read the sticky thread of course:

nice again scottish ...
do you know if my printer setup will 'perhaps' be affected.
whatever happens is fine of course.
I've become much much good-er due to issues arising. :--)
So, I should try 'force' ?
Offline
If you do use force, do a "pacman -Sf hplip". Note the lack of a "u" in there... that would be bad!
Anyway, we can not really help further until you tell us what the conflicts are and if you checked if the files were owned by another package.

It's really bad practice to force files under these circumstances, but if everything belongs to hplip, it probably won't be a big deal. But, it may cause all sorts of issues.

Thanks Allan. Thanks scottish.
i'll have a think and write back later.
Looks like they're all owned by hplip only.
It was the fact that the printer's working that I was thinking about.
Not a big deal to redo the setting I guess. If needed.

most interesting.
I uninstalled hplip and the new version which was already on my machine locally gave me the same error.
That it couln't update as the files were already in the filesystem.
I'll read the above better and try to deduce what's best. All the files are owned by hplip alone.
it's interesting that the abiword problem of it crashing when trying to involke the print command has changed to now, beinging up the print box with the printer saying it's paused.
I was thinking to delete all the files noted as being already in file system manually.
these two look a bit important, as in having something to do with setting perhaps. don't know as yet.
below refers I believe to the new files that can't be copied as the old version was 2.8.x the files referenced below say 3.9.2

Worked great as far as install goes.
renamed the 5 or so folders and files with _off at the end of existing name.
There was one symlink? that I couldn't right click on or anything.
This one:
hplip: /usr/bin/hp-query exists in filesystem
I just cut it by using cut from top menu of pcmanfm and moved it out of the /usr/bin folder
So, a reboot to be safer perhaps... and then I did an -Syu and an install of hplip
I'll now test though looks like Iv'e gotten to where I need to be.
Now to see if abiword can now print (prob for other thread of two a few of us are having) and if the printer needs to be rediscovered.
thank you!!!!!!!!
NOPE: abiword now disappear/crashes when print is invoked. interesting!
