Unable to install nvidia drivers

After a few days trying, I could finally install Arch, get the wireless network working, download KDE and log on to it. Everything seems to work ok, but the desktop can only be displayed in 800x600. Since I hadn't worried about video card drivers, I assumed I just needed to install the nvidia ones. So i open up the terminal, log in as root and type pacman -S nvidia. The program says that libgl conflicts with the nvidia drivers and asks for permission to remove libgl, so I grant it. i expected it to remove libgl and start downloading and installing the new drivers, but it just froze (just the terminal). I thought that maybe KDE was using libgl and that it couldn't be touched at the time, so I restarted Arch to get the command line, repeated the pacman -S nvidia and got exactly the same result: it froze. I opened a second console and ran 'top', but pacman was nowhere to be seen.

I keep messing up in this Arch adventure, but I've learned a lot from my mistakes. Any light on this subject?

Re: Unable to install nvidia drivers

top doesn't even list X, so I'm not sure how to kill it. Also, I tried

#init 1

and tried installing the drivers from there, but the machine hanged and I had to reboot through the reset button...
