[SOLVED] Sound and resolution problems

Hi,

I recently installed arch and so far have been very impressed. The only problems I've run into so far, as the title suggests, is the sound and resolution.

I have configured the sound with alsa and if I 'aplay' a sound file it comes out of the speakers, but thats the only way it comes out. When I set all the sound prefreneces in GNOME to ALSA, when I click the test sound I get the following message:

audiotest wave=sine freg=512!
audioconvert ! audioresample ! gconfaudiosink:
Could not open audio device for playback.

So, at this point, what should I do?

And the resolution -- I have a 1400 x 900 monitor and when I edit the Xorg.conf file, the option does no appear in the gnome screen resolution setting. Mabye I'm just editing it in the wrong place?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

-Thanks for all the help. I've solved both problems (Installed gstreamer0.10-alsa and the drivers did the trick for the res)

What video card are you using? will you post the contents of /etc/X11/xorg.conf

You ran xorgconfig and chose your settings:

Lets try let X detect your card.If you havn't already, you need to install xf86-video-radeonhd or xf86-video-ati or both.
As root then run: Xorg -configure
A xorg.conf will be generated for you.Make sure you move it to /etc/X11/ See if that fixes your resolution issue.Im not sure about your sound though

If aplay plays sound and none of the volume levels are muted in alsamixer it sounds like a setting in gnome.I wont be much help as ive always been a kde user

[EDIT] Changed the "HorizSync" to the correct numbers, and rebooted, now everything works.
