Kdm

Hi!

I don't know if this is the proper place or newbie corner is best suited. I have a problem with kdm since my last kernel and packages update. I was using kde 4.1 and kernel 2.6.17 but the last pacman -Syu upgrade me to the last kernel and kde. The problem is that I can no longer login with my regular user. When I enter my username and password, kdm try to begin loading things but appears that something fails (I can not see a thing) and kdm starts again, asking me to log again.

The only way to walk around the problem is to start kde using root user and skipping kdm (ie, startx or startkde). I've try to change the permissions of all directories and files at usr, opt, etc. thinking that maybe my user can't read/write on those places and it were needed, so I change every directory and file group to wheel instead of root. But nothing works for me.

I've been already burned all my ships so I wonder if someone could give me hand.:(

Thanks
Walter

This one is a very very bad idea!! Don't mess with permissions on these directories!! I'm not sure you'll be able to reverse this operation!!

There must be a way to launch KDM from the command line and check the output to see what's wrong. I think there must be a /var/log/kdm.log which would be the first place to look in order to find the error.

Re: Kdm

This was my last kdm.log

********************************************************************************
Note that your system uses syslog. All of kdm's internally generated messages
(i.e., not from libraries and external programs/scripts it uses) go to the
daemon.* syslog facility; check your syslog configuration to find out to which
file(s) it is logged. PAM logs messages related to authentication to authpriv.*.

Re: Kdm

Do you start KDM as a daemon in rc.conf or init ?
There is not much I can tell from your log. Try to update your system again. A new KDE version has been released recently, maybe there's a mismatch between KDM and other packages.

Re: Kdm

I've tried to start KDM as a deamon in rc.conf and login as root in console mode then calling kdm from command line. Both start KDM, I enter the username and password (which is correct because if I write something wrong it tells me so), then goes to blank screen as loading for a fraction of seconds, and KDM starts again.

I can not login as root from kdm but if I call startx or startkde, kde starts logged as root. I've read somewhere something like "never login as root in KDE because ...". For me it is the only way to access KDE, no other username can.

I've tried already to desinstall KDE and installing again but the same keeps happening. Maybe I should reinstalling everything again or maybe downgrade to KDE 3.5

Thanks for the comments.

Re: Kdm

So, if I got you right, you currently log as root in console, and then startx or startkde.
Can't you log as your regular user in console and then start KDE ? If so, you can always try to install another login manager (SLiM, GDM...) and use it instead of KDM.

Now, because you actually messed thing up by changing critical directories ownership, if I were you I'd start all over again with a fresh install.

No, it says that only root can start kde or kdm. Even using su startkde or su kdm

I've never used another login manager because I thought that for instance gdm is used to login in gnome. But, I'll give it a try.

Yeah, it is my last resource a fresh install. But if I give up so easily I wouldn't learn a thing ever roll
I've just change the group permissions from root to wheel not the ownership which continue to be as it was (root it most cases). But as you stated, it may not have rollback.

Regards. I appreciate your help and valuable time.

Isn't HAL daemon supposed to take care of that ?

Re: Kdm

Same here. KDM goes blank for a couple of seconds before it turns up again bright and shiny and new - but I'm not logged in. From what I gather this seems to happen to ATI cards only - I've got an X1550 and am using the open source driver.

What I tried:
1 - started it both from rc.conf and inittab - no difference
2 - added dbus to rc.conf for the hell of it (both hal and dbus starting in the background), no difference.
3 - removed my xorg.conf and rebooted - I didn't have mouse nor keyboard so pressing the reset button was my only way out.

The whole issue doesn't really bug me too much since I can log in from the CLI but wouldn't mind getting to the bottom of it...

Re: Kdm

Ha, I just noticed that hal doesn't start for some reason which would explain it. The quest continues...

Fixed hal/dbus issue and everything is working again as advertised big_smile
