[Solved] No sound in either mplayer or vlc

I am completely at a loss with this problem, when I play a video file on mplayer, let's say, I just type "mplayer <file>", things seem to set to their proper devices without any errors...

Opening audio decoder: [mp3lib] MPEG layer-2, layer3
AUDIO: 48000 Hz, 2 ch, s16le, 128.0 kbit/8.33% (ratio: 16000->192000)
Selected audio codec: [mp3] afm: mp3lib (mp3lib MPEG layer-2, layer3)
==================================================
AO: [oss] 48000Hz 2ch s16le (2 bytes per sample)
Starting playback...

It makes even less sense since I'm using OSS with MPD and NCMPCPP runs freakin beautifully when it comes to music.  But trying to play even music with mplayer -- no sound, even though it appears loaded, I checked mute levels, using alsa, downloaded mplayer-w32codecs, tried it with alsa-plugins installed, used "-ao alsa," to try alsa then all others, and it chose oss again.  Most other posts I run across on google are like 2-3 yrs old, and no one here seems to be quite experiencing my same problems (which seems to be like every post I've been making recently! *grumble*)

Re: [Solved] No sound in either mplayer or vlc

1. Can you post verbose output with mplayer?
2. I once had a similar problem with an onboard soundcard which could only use 1 output at once. I fixed this by letting all applications use alsa which had dmix software support.

Re: [Solved] No sound in either mplayer or vlc

I could, but I don't know how to copy from xterm into firefox (I can paste from firefox into xterm with ctrl-ins, mx revolution doesn't seem to have a middle mouse anymore for me)...  I figured that was enough output, I don't think anything else mentions audio.

I'm using a Sound Blaster Audigy 2, it worked just fine when I was using FreeBSD last week with any number of programs benig open.

I tried number two to its fullest extent though by shutting down mpd after a reboot and just trying to run a movie with nothing else loaded... still nothing. sad

Works here just as usual (in IceWM): Select Xterm contents and paste this into firefox with ctrl-v.

To know or not to know ...
... the questions remain forever.

Had to output to a file and open with mousepad to copy and paste, here's the verbose (didn't know this existed!) tongue

what soundcard do you have?

[edit] misread your first post.  if you're using oss, you dont need alsa-plugins, and you definitely dont want to use -ao alsa.  do you have vmix enabled in OSS?

Re: [Solved] No sound in either mplayer or vlc

I have no idea, not sure how to do that...

[edit] Ok, so, it turns out if I do ao -oss:/dev/dsp2 things work.  I friggin hate have two of something under Linux. sad

I'd like to know about this vmix thing though, I've seen others talk about it and saw something about vmixctl attach <device> but it kept saying device in use, then if I sounded off, it said device busy.  Then again, I generally just type in things half the time not knowing what they do unless they BREAK.  When things work first time I have no idea why.

Also, is there a way to default which dsp device to look for?

Re: [Solved] No sound in either mplayer or vlc

http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/OSS#The_mixer

the wiki doesn't go too much into it, but if you have the "vmix" checkbox on the top left enabled (using ossxmix), then close out all sound apps, and either type
sudo /etc/rc.d/oss restart
or do a reboot, it should enable vmix.  you can also edit your ~/.mplayer/conf to set oss as default with /dev/dsp2 or whatever there.  check out man mplayer or the OSS wiki at http://www.opensound.com/wiki/index.php/Troubleshooting
4front-tech forums are also helpful (from time to time): http://www.4front-tech.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=3

I like OSS but it can be a pain in mplayer (for me anyway).  with kaffeine/xine it works well.

Re: [Solved] No sound in either mplayer or vlc

Thanks, now I know you can do /etc/rc.d/oss restart too.  I'm not sure how I stumbled upon the /dev/dsp2 thing, but when I was searching for the problem, of course I didn't see anything that would help, then once I saw you're post it dawned on me I might try it with a specific dsp and found a way to type it in (ao -oss:/dev/dsp2) from like the second thing I read.   I need to figure out how to Google better.

Re: [Solved] No sound in either mplayer or vlc

Did you read the wiki page on OSS? I forget, but there's either a tip on there for making MPlayer work with OSS, or there's a link to a 4Front page with said tip.

Also, you're sure you're in the audio group, right?
