Which packages for the latest gnome release?

Hello,

which packages do I have to install to have the most recent gnome version 2.24.3?

Looking in the wiki there's written, that I should install gnome and gnome-extra but as I see there are some programs in gnome-extra that runs in version 2.22 and not 2.24.

So what do I have to install?

Thanks smile

EDIT: By already talking about Gnome, do I need the gnome-system-tools? But as I see it seems to be also only for 2.22..

Re: Which packages for the latest gnome release?

I'd install the complete gnome group (pacman -S gnome, 'Y') and then some parts of gnome-extras (pacman -S gnome-extras, 'N', and go through the list); that is, if you know what each package does. If not, just install everything.
Don't bother about the version numbers, our GNOME packager knows best why some package isn't updated to the latest upstream version.

Regarding gnome-system-tools: I suppose those are missing half of their functionality anyway (runlevel and service editing comes to mind; Arch is a bit different with its use of rc.conf) and Arch users usually prefer editing rc.conf and using simple commandline tools over GUI frontends.

Re: Which packages for the latest gnome release?

Thanks for your post. smile

I installed all of the packages exceot the gnome-system-tools and everything looks fine so far. But there's still one problem I could not solve yet. I tried to pimp my desktop a little bit with the use of some gtk+metacity themes from gnome-look.org. So I put them in ~/.themes and activated them by using right mouse -> appearance but they don't look like in the sceenshots. There seems to be missing something and I assume this is caused by missing gtk engines.

But which packages do I have to install to have full functionality? Can anyone commend some styles that work pretty well?

Re: Which packages for the latest gnome release?

If you press no to the whole group 'gnome', and instead choose the bits and pieces that you want to install separately, then you can get rid of epiphany (like firefox, but not as good). I don't know if that helps, but I find it useful big_smile

Re: Which packages for the latest gnome release?

You should read this:
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Gnome

Whereas you should install this things:
  pacman -S gtk-engines gtk2-themes-collection gtk-aurora-engine gtk-candido-engine gtk-rezlooks-engine gtk-engine-murrine

Re: Which packages for the latest gnome release?

The repository gtk-engines are a little outdated, I suggest you to try the AUR ones, specially for the murrine engine, a lot of new nice themes from gnome-look need the latest version of the engine.
