locked mouse and keyboard on X startup

Hi,
I have a dell vostro 1500, with an nvidia GeForce  8400M GS. Before installing archlinux, I had an ubuntu 7.10, and X worked fine at an auto-detected resolution of 1280x1024. After installing archlinux, if I configure X with any of the suggested tools on the archlinux X wiki, or with nvidia-xconfig, the resolution is set at 1024x800 and everything works fine. If I manually change it to either 1280x1024 or auto-detect (which tries to set it at 1280x1024), X starts but mouse and keyboard are locked hard, and I have to ssh to kill X. With icewm, the desktop looks perfect, and there is no trace of an error either in /var/log/messages.log or /var/log/Xorg.*.log or ~/.xsession-errors. With kde4, plasma segfaults and blacks out, but the automatically started applications can be seen in working state, producing output. The only errors logged in this case (that I can find) are these 2 lines:

Mar 10 21:51:27 gallina nepomukservices[2782]: segfault at 4 ip b7eba552 sp bfc51820 error 4 in libQtCore.so.4.4.3[b7e71000+1bd000]
Mar 10 21:51:30 gallina plasma[2788]: segfault at 8 ip b6ab957a sp bfb91ea0 error 4 in libQtCore.so.4.4.3[b697b000+1bd000]

Anybody has an idea of what is happening?

Re: locked mouse and keyboard on X startup

Sorry, I must add that, of course, I am using the nvidia driver in all cases.

Re: locked mouse and keyboard on X startup

That problem might be solved by adding HAL to the daemons in /etc/rc.conf.
