Is anyone else experiencing frequent crashes with Pidgin v2.5.5? It doesn't matter if I use it in GNOME or KDE (or OpenBox), it crashes all the same!
I've run it from the terminal now and am in the process of seeing if it gives me any usable errors... mostly likely it's just "Sementation fault."

I haven't had any problems with it. Is it crashing at random or only when you're doing something with it?

It also happened to me sometimes after the last ugrade.
In the debug window I saw some message referring ssl but I didn't copied it... If it happens again, I'll post the error message here.

My Pidgin went on a CPU binge. Used a large percentage of my CPUs.

I happens to me also, using KDE4.2. Pidgin just disappears without trace. Also, when I leave my box idle, sometimes is starts to consume 100% processor time, so I have to kill it. But this is not new, I've had this in previous Pidgin versions as well.

Aha!
Pidgin 2.5.5 has segfaulted and attempted to dump a core file.
This is a bug in the software and has happened through
no fault of your own.
If you can reproduce the crash, please notify the developers
by reporting a bug at:
http://developer.pidgin.im/simpleticket/
Please make sure to specify what you were doing at the time
and post the backtrace from the core file. If you do not know
how to get the backtrace, please read the instructions at
http://developer.pidgin.im/wiki/GetABacktrace
* Took until now to get it to crash but it just did for no reason.

This was happening to me in KDE 4.2 but I believe that is a different issue to do with argb colours used in the systray.
Anyway, since upgrading my pidgin has hogged the cpu a few times too.

Hello there!
I can confirm that this problemt happens to me too with the latest version (2.5.5)!
Sometimes it crashes, and the application just disapears. Other times, the process consumes 100% of the CPU, and the contact window stays blank. Only killing the process and restarting the application gets things back to normal.
Cheers,

im waiting silently for a new pidgin release....this one is quite buggy

I could try run gdb with it, but crashes are random, so I may try it some days and get no crash, or it could happen 5 minutes from now.

is there any (good) alternative you can use in the meantime? this random closing is really starting to get to me..

I use only the MSN protocol (it's the most popular here in Brazil), so I could use emesene without problems, though I'd miss the contacts being sorted by log size, for example.

it definately stopped crashing here, but it might be coincidental.....since there was no pidgin update since 2.5.5

i have the same problem, but only when i use GTALK, with MSN protocol i don't have any problem.

I have problems using the MSN protocol. As this is the only protocol I use, I've been using emesen-crazy from aur.

This time on Arch64 with the same build options as above. Pidgin sees eight hours a day of use, runs stable and smooth, no race conditions, most everything works (ossplay %s for sound), mem usage around 25 res logged into IRC, AIM, Yahoo (two accounts), GTalk, and MSN (two accounts) simultaneously...

I'm using Arch64, too, without sound. The funny thing about the 'pidgin using 100% of one CPU' but is that it started happenning only after I read about it, though it rarely happens. And I did have some random crashes with it.
The only plugin I use is musictracker, but I doubt it's its fault, for it worked just fine with pidgin 2.5.4.

I've been able to crash Pidgin pretty frequently. I pretty much use strictly the MSN client, and receive multiple notifications all concerning the same 'new e-mail message' in hotmail. When I close the notification window, Pidgin crashes. This has been happening for around two months for me. Arch x86_64, KDEmod 3.5.10, pidgin 2.5.5-2.

Perhaps you could disable/uncheck the 'New mail notifications' option...

pidgin also crashin here, without any warning, just random. sometimes it runs stable for like 4 hours, and sometimes it crashes right after i ran it. Don't think it's WM (or DE) related, I'm on awesome 3.3pre2 btw.
edit: on msn protocol, forgot about that minor detail.

I'll try that after retrieving a gdb log of the crash. Strangely enough, running pidgin through gdb seems to make it stable...
