having the same problem here

well, considering this problem has been around for some time with no apparent fix, ive decided to go to the pidgin homepage and try to track this bug somewhere....i got overwhelmed with the ammount of open bugs this piece of crapware has: http://developer.pidgin.im/wiki/OpenBugs
and that just lists acknowledged bugs

Many of these bugs are from older versions:
#2655 Mobile Device Group Appearance + old groups resurrected after 2.1.1
#2862 Pidgin 2.1.1 randomly quits on SLED10 SP1
What they need is a good bugs database clean up. Besides, I don't think that judging the quality by its number os bugs is a good idea. At the moment, Arch has 645 open bugs, and it's not a crappy distro.

i didnt notice that, yes, a good bug database would mean it easier bug tracking / fixing
and please, lets not compare arch which is a full blown distro vs a puny im client which seems to alienate its users with every new release. too bad there isnt a better alternative, im waiting for epiphany to catch up...

apparantly 2.5.6 holds a fix... currently, however, developer.pidgin.im seems to be down.

2.5.6 just hit the repos, no crash so far. It's looking good.

Looks good here too. I've been using it for the last couple of hours and no high CPU usage yet (finally!).

This patch fixes a race condition when using the msn protocol, I worked with 2.5.5, it's put in 2.5.6, see ChangeLog
