Disk re-starts after spin-down

Hi,

After a recent -Syu, my unused spare disk re-starts after it is stopped in /etc/rc.local by /usr/bin/sdparm -C stop /dev/sda. The upgrade included udev, initscripts, klibc-udev and yslog-ng. If I do /usr/bin/sdparm -C stop /dev/sda again in a terminal, the disk stops and starts again, running unnecessarily.

Any ideas please?

My thanks in advance.

Re: Disk re-starts after spin-down

Are there any mounted partitions there or any program that might be trying to access the partitions there? Maybe you should use hdparm instead of sdparm. Maybe the -Y option will do what you want but read the man page before trying anything smile

Re: Disk re-starts after spin-down

I'm experiencing a situation very similar (or maybe identical) to yours. I wasn't able to find a solution so I just use `hdparm -S' in /etc/rc.local and have the disk spin down automatically after 10 minutes.

Re: Disk re-starts after spin-down

I have the same issue. "hdparm -y /dev/sda" or "hdparm -y /dev/hda" wont send my drives (sda and hda) to sleep.
I can hear it parking the head and starting to spin down but it immediately spins up again.

How can I find out what is waking up my drives?
"lsof | grep /dev/sda" shows nothing.

OK, I tried using hdparm -Y but I still have the same problem, in fact the disk starts even sooner, right after it starts spin-down! (with sdparm it starts after it completely stops spinning). I have tried hdparm -S 1 but there was no effect. I don't know if it will spin-down after a longer delay than the 5 sec specified though.

Re: Disk re-starts after spin-down

As asked above, is anything on the disk mounted? I find my disks spin up again if there's a partition mounted on them.

Ah, I forgot to reply to that - no, there is no mounted partitions on that disk or any reference to its partitions in /etc/fstab. Whatever it is, it started with the update I did a few days ago.
