I just found this out the hard way. After a routine -Syu I logged in/out of X I had no core keyboard. I imagine that will catch quite a few newer ppl and someone might want to make note of it on the news page that they need to either run xorgconfig again or edit xorg.conf.

I agree with tenthirteen that it would be useful for newer users to notify them about this somehow... (unless their config already has it lowercase?)

I have arch installed in vmware, and even after fixing the keyboard I still have a problem with the mouse. The driver it is using is vmmouse. It worked until I upgraded.
