I just switch to Arch (coming from Ubuntu) and so far the only thing that is giving me real headache is, that I cannot get the right resolution working. I need 1440x900 but I only get 1024x768.
I followed the Beginners Guide, looked through the wiki, googled but didn't get any further. My old Ubuntu xorg.conf doesn't seem to be any help.
I'm using Intel GMA X4500HD (in a Dell Latitude E6400) and installed xf86-video-vesa and Xfce4.6.
My current version of xorg.conf (generated by xorg -configure and by now slightly modified) looks like this:

I tried others, but things just got worse. Looking into xorg.0.log I found:
(II) VESA(0): Not using mode "1440x900" (no mode of this name)
(II) VESA(0): Not using mode "1280x1024" (no mode of this name)
(--) VESA(0): Virtual size is 1024x768 (pitch 1024)
(**) VESA(0): *Built-in mode "1024x768"
No matter which of the two xorg.conf I was using, it allways told me "no mode of this name". Is there a Problem with vesa? Am I using the wrong driver? I tried removing vesa and using xf86-video-intel, but ended up with no X at all. I aimed for using laptop-display and external monitor but for now just having the right resolution on the notebook would be great to avoid more headaches
I would be great if someone could help, Thanks in advance :-)
(And sorry for probably poor english)

Section "Screen"

Device "Card0"
Monitor "Monitor0"
DefaultColorDepth 16
...
SubSection "Display"
Depth 16
Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSection
The default depth is 16, but the 16 depth section doesn't have an option for 1440x900
So add the 144x900 mode option, of course, but also add it in the depth 24 section and set your default depth to 24. (16 just ain't enough for maximum pretty )

P.S. If, like me, you always run in one resolution and color depth, you can always simplify your conf by pruning out all of the extra crap (who runs in color depth 4 ). My screen section, for example, is short and sweet:
Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen0"
Device "Card0"
Monitor "Monitor0"
SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "1440x900"
EndSection

Thanks for the tips, but sadly both didn't work. Seems like I had overwritten the version with DefaultDepth 24 and the 1440x900 option in the screen section while trying to fix the problem. I added a modeline for 1440x900 but xorg.0.log still says there is no mode.
The simplified version didn't work either :-(

Never mind, just fixed it :-)
Like I suggested befor it was vesa. Changing vesa to intel in xorg.conf did the job (+ the simplified screen-section). I thought I had tried xf86-video-intel but seems like I had forgotten to modify the conf.
Thanks for the help, I'll get a coffee and continue configuring my new system :-)
