Gnome stops loading after login

Hi all.

I just finished a new install of arch with gnome (2nd time today,same thing happened the first time, but the first time i just reinstalled arch because i thought i had messed up something)

Everything went well the first time i logged in from gdm to gnome, but when i was going to reboot and then log in again, gnome suddely stopped loading and just leaves me with the cursor and the wallpaper. This happens everytime, so now i cant use gnome. I hope some of you guys know something about this, as i dont want to reinstall again.

GDM -> Gnome -> Nothing but a wallpaper and mouse cursor

oh and I have tried using gnome from the gnome-session command but the same thing happens. its like something halts gnome from loading the stuff that it needs.

Re: Gnome stops loading after login

Did you read http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Gnome ?

I'm guessing you don't have HAL, Fuse, etc.?
Also, don't install FAM... I'm pretty sure that article needs editing - unless Gamin has problems with Gnome, which I doubt, Gamin is now preferred over FAM. Install Gamin with pacman instead of FAM, and you don't even need to add it to the daemons list.

Re: Gnome stops loading after login

I have both HAL, Fuse (as background daemon/module) and Gamin installed. No fam. Still the same thing.

MODULES=(fuse)

DEAMONS=(@preload iptables network @alsa @hal @gdm @stbd)

Just one basic question. Is your X starts with out any problem?

Re: Gnome stops loading after login

If I do a "startx", the X starts without problems and I can use firefox or w/e.

Re: Gnome stops loading after login

I suspect your Gnome installation might get corrupted. One way is to re-install it using another mirror and ensure that all the current installation is removed completely (http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Pacman). In the     DAEMONS keep gdm as the last entry and give a try.

Re: Gnome stops loading after login

I had this same issue. I didn't really spend a lot of time trying to fix it. I ended up just creating a new user account and then the issue went away. I haven't had it happen again.

Re: Gnome stops loading after login

Okay so I've been trying to figure things out. I can use gnome as root, by adding "exec gnome-session" in .xinitrc and then typing "startx", but not as my normal user. I tried messing around with the gdm settings, but of no luck.

I also tried installing gnome and everything else, from a different mirror than last time, but same problem still.

Any input?

Re: Gnome stops loading after login

Oh and I almost forgot, here is my .xsession-errors:

/etc/gdm/Xsession: Beginning session setup...
/etc/gdm/Xsession: ssh-agent not found!
/etc/gdm/Xsession: Setup done, will execute: gnome-session
The files that contain your preference settings are currently in use.

You might be logged in to a session from another computer, and the other login session is using your preference settings files.

You can continue to use the current session, but this might cause temporary problems with the preference settings in the other session.

Do you want to continue? Continue (y/n)?gnome-session[2983]: Gtk-CRITICAL: gtk_main_quit: assertion `main_loops != NULL' failed

Re: Gnome stops loading after login

after changing the permissions on the gconf.xml files in /etc/gconf, my .xsession-errors look like this:

/etc/gdm/Xsession: Beginning session setup...
/etc/gdm/Xsession: Setup done, will execute: /usr/bin/ssh-agent -- gnome-session
GNOME_KEYRING_SOCKET=/tmp/keyring-LAKkwk/socket
SSH_AUTH_SOCK=/tmp/keyring-LAKkwk/socket.ssh

Re: Gnome stops loading after login

Try blowing out your .gnome directories in your home directory. Since you just installed, you won't be losing too many saved preferences.

Re: Gnome stops loading after login

Allright so Im gonna try delete my regular user. I have one question though. Is it possible to delete my user "sphere", and then recreate it with the same username and still have my settings and personal files from i.e /home/sphere?

Make a new user instead, and try gnome with that.
