Re: kde menu

If you upgraded to KDE 3.3, try reinstalling it. Several people, including myself, had similar problems.  It seems that sometime some files don't get installed.

Some menu entry disappeard, some other changed the path
kmenuedit is tring to save the new menu entry in wrong places, it is looking for gnome menu dir!

Re: kde menu

I have dayly upgraded current. Todays upgrade was xorg, qt and some small programs (initscripts also). So kde wasn't upgrade. I tryed to remove ~/.kde and ~/.qt but it doesn't solve problem.

I'm still waiting for solution.

Re: kde menu

try a clean reinstall:
pacman -R kde
pacman -S kde

it worked for me. I still have problem with kmenuedit.  I doesn't save the change you do to the menu so I am stuck with the original menu.

Good luck!

Re: kde menu

I can confirm this, but actually the problem occured after upgrading to qt-3.3.3, I don't know if this helps any, but it's what I noticed, I was running KDE already.

After that I uninstalled KDE, deleted all kde related and qt related stuff from my home dir reinstalled again, and my menu is just empty.

Re: kde menu

Hi

I have the same problem sad

I switched to xorg today and after that the K menu was empty
and Konsole and Konqueror buttons disappeared from taskbar...

When I start kcontrol then the module list is empty and i get the following message to console:

kcontrol: WARNING: No K menu group with X-KDE-BaseGroup=settings found ! Defaulting to Settings/

I have tried several times clean install with pacman -R kde and pacman -S kde
Also i have uninstalled xorg and installed xfree86 back and then reinstalled kde and the problem is still the same...

Re: kde menu

The problem with the menu isn't caused by the new versions of qt and xorg since I am still using the older versions.  BTW, in my case, it was the control center that was empty. Strange... :?

Re: kde menu

Check this FlySpray Task and see if it's related to the environment variables set there for freedesktop.org compliance.

kdelibs might need to be rebuild because it has a nasty hack for setting the environment variables. A gnome core package (I don't know its name) must also be fixed & rebuilt (also because of those environment variables) - when the defaults were not set and each environment tried to hack the implementation one way or another.

Re: kde menu

Performed the upgrade on xorg and QT. I still had my KDE menu. Came home tonight after a parent/teacher function and pacman -Syu and got a hit on zlibs.  installed zlib....

BOOM!

KDE menu's are gone and empty. Apps are still there... I can call them manually from the "Run Command" entry...

But everything else is powdered toast!

Re: kde menu

Yes, same here. Yeterday I used newest KDE, QT and Xorg without any problems. Today I updatet zlib too and after I changed something in KDE-Menu or in the Mime-Menu the problems began.
There is no K-Menu, Kontrolcentre doesnt start and many other KDE-programs like kmail, konqueror etc. doesnt work as they should do.

Re: kde menu

Hi tpowa.

I'm observing the same problems (nearly empty menus; icons missing applications; and missing services and graphics) with KDE 3.3.0-1 as the previous posters. This has occurred on three different machines. I've tried to see if downgrading to an earlier version of Xorg or even XFree86 would help, but it doesn't. I've cleared out all the "dot" configuration files from my home directory before installing (and even cleared out /opt/kde as well), but this doesn't help. I've trying re-installing after installation as well as upgrading, but this doesn't help. Tracking down what's going on here is quite problematic, since I've seen the problem occur: (a) with the initial screens; (b) after doing configuration changes using the Control Center; (c) after downloading using pacman; and (d) just logging in again.

In sum: I haven't found yet any consistent way to reproduce or avoid this problem.

Regards.

Re: kde menu

These are really strange problems. I think there is a problem with kde at all. There are some bugs like spellchecking not working every time, which is not a problem with debian and kde 3.3. Perhaps I will try a complete new installation of arch. I wonder why a lot of people have these problems but not everyone.

Re: kde menu

Back after some testing. I found that when I uninstall the new xorg and I delete my .kde* files everything will return to normal, I will now test the 3.3.0-2 packages, see if that works ...

Re: kde menu

I've tested the KDE 3.3.0-2 packages, doesn't help one bit. Next to that a couple of other problems have presented themselves:

artsd crashes at startup
plastik theme gone
german KDM (I don't even have german installed :? )

Oh and btw, I believe you asked that in the other thread, I'm not an NVIDIA user

Hello,
I've got the "vanishing menues" problem too sad
You wrote that uninstalling xorg can help, so how can I "downgrade" to the earlier version?

Thank you, Searinox

Re: kde menu

OK, I installed a complete clean arch with xorg and kde...resulting in same problems. So it must be a problem within the packages.

I think it's caused by gcc 3.4.2 ... libstd++...

I had that problem before upgrading to gcc 3.4.2. My guess is that it is a problem with the kde 3.3-1 package.  I haven't tried kde 3.3-2 yet.
