also great:
RSS Integration
Thunderbird now features a built in RSS reader which allows you to easily subscribe to
and read news and weblogs that support RSS.
And..
Linux GNOME users can now make Thunderbird their default e-mail client (Tools > Options > General).

if you want it updated got to the arch home page and flag the package as "out of date" - i have no doubt this has already been done tho so i am in no doubt that the maintainer is aware of the release - bumping this thread is going to do jack to speed up the release of an AL package

After updating to 0.8 from testing I've lost all my mail!!
I can't see any previously received mail in the folders. Also, I can't receive any new mail. I can succesfully send though. Any solutions?

[edit] Mail isn't actually lost, just not visible.. downgrading to 0.7.3 helps, but isn't really a solution..

i will upgrade to 0.8 tomorrow from windows.
maybe i´ll find a solution.
I think its just a problem with the folders.

I upgraded both firefox and thunderbird with no problems. Both are starting visably faster!

MatrixP
It was.
My 0.7.3 installation had preferences and mail saved into
~/.thunderbird/Default/8ytr2f4j/Mail/
when I
pacman -R mozilla-thunderbird
rm -rf ~/.thunderbird/Default/8ytr2f4j/Mail/*
pacman -S mozilla-thunderbird
and copied folder containing backup to new preferences and mail directory which is
~/.thunderbird/k34jnj6o.default/Mail/
everything worked fine.
So the reason was that for some reason the directory layout is different between two versions!

hi murkus,
Are you sure that all informations are stored in the folder "Mail"? Are there also all passwords and account names?
If it is so, then i know where my problem is.
Thx

I guess I wasn't clear enough. sorry about that.
To my knowledge, there's only the folder contents inside the ~/.thunderbird/default/234jbsd/Mail/ directory. If you have several accounts they are each a separate directory under Mail/
Under the Mail/name-for-account1 is all the mail folders for that account. Same goes for Mail/name-for-account2 etc.
What I did was
0) create Saved folder in thunderbird (0.7.3) and copy emails there
1) backup Mail/* to some place
2) pacman -R mozilla-thunderbird (0.7.3)
3) delete ~/.thunderbird/*
4) pacman -S mozilla-thunderbird (0.8 )
5) create new accounts (sigh)
6) cp moz-thunderbird.backup/default/234jbsd/Mail/name-for-account1/Saved ~/.thunderbird/yp97fgh3.default/Mail/new-account1/
7) in thunderbird (0.8 ) move messages from saved where I wanted them
above procedure sucks beyond belief but at least I got my old mail transferred.
I hope that cleared things.

markus, that's what I did too, but I found out that's not necessary!
HOW TO GET YOUR MAIL BACK WHEN YOU UPGRADE THUNDERBIRD:
(sorry for the obnoxious text, but i want people to notice this)
Thunderbird 0.8 by default starts using the new Global Inbox in Local Folders. All new emails are downloaded and saved here, but your old emails are still in the old mailbox. If you have multiple email accounts, you can keep one Inbox instead of several, which makes things neater.
To get your mail back go to Tools -> Account Settings. Click on the Server Settings for your account, then click on the Advanced button near the bottom. In the POP tab, select "Inbox for this server's account"
There, you have your mail back.
Now, if you have multiple boxes, and you want to use the new Global Inbox, then just create a temporary folder in your Local Folders, select all the mails in your account's Inbox and drag them to the temp folder. Go back and change the setting from "Inbox for this server's account" to "Global Inbox". Now you can drag everything from temp to the new inbox.
The reason we have to make the temporary folder is because I'm pretty sure the Global Inbox is hidden unless we have an account that's using it. And if your account IS using it, then you can't see your old mails to copy them over. So we need a place to keep them while we change the settings. Capiche?

paranoos, you're genius!
I just wish you would've told me that earlier.. well I got my mail, that's the most important thing.

Capiche?
If it only would work... I already had "Inbox for this server's account" option checked. Other ideas?
And losing my email really isn't an option.
*looking for a place to hang oneself*
I'll try that deleting stuff.

Hi there. I'm freaking out a bit because I upgraded and can't make the solutions provided above function.
Paranoos' solution doesn't work for me...
What can I do now, once I've upgraded to get my mail back?

What is it that you cannot do?
After you've upgraded to 0.8 do the following
#cd ~/.thunderbird
#ls
kj672hjr.default appreg profiles.ini
#cd kj672hjr.default/Mail
#ls
// here will be Local Folders + directories for your accounts
now, copy from your account directory Inbox & Inbox.msf to the Local Folders with a new name
#cp pop3.youraccount.com/Inbox Local Folders/OldMail
#cp pop3.youraccount.com/Inbox.msf Local Folders/OldMail.msf
restart thunderbird.
This method of moving old mail to new version of thunderbird has worked for me since 0.2 to 0.3 transition. Luckily I've had to do it only twice..
I hope it helps.

Here's what worked for me...
I had a few accounts set up, and they were all in their separate folder trees. So maybe that had something to do with other suggestions not working for me.
1. Back up .thunderbird/ACCOUNT
2. Delete .thunderbird
3. pacman -S mozilla-thunderbird
4. Run thunderbird, create a dummy account, but YOU MUST UNCHECK USE GLOBAL INBOX!
5. Close Thunderbird
6. Copy the contents of your old Mail/MAILACCOUNT/ folder into the new Mail/MAILACCOUNT folder
7. Run thunderbird, copy the folders over to the Local Folders section, rename the new folders.
8. Repeat steps 5 through 7 for each account.
I lost some email, but I think I didn't rename the folder like I state in step 7 before deleting the files.
fffft!

I use an IMAP mail server, and when I start Thunderbird 0.8 the circle-of-circles thing in the top right spins, and the status bar reads "Opening folder..." and the cursor is just a watch, and nothing ever happens. I left it like this all night long, and it was still going in the morning. Also, if I hit the "Stop" button the whole window dies. When I run it in a shell, it dies with this error:
/opt/mozilla-thunderbird/lib/thunderbird-0.8/run-mozilla.sh: line 159: 1459 Segmentation fault "$prog" ${1+"$@"}
Any ideas? I don't think this has to do with the Global Inbox, since that's only for POP accounts (I also check two pop accounts in Thunderbird, but and they don't automatically check when Thunderbird starts, and the primary one is Thunderbird).
Thanks,
John

How it workes for me to move my eMails from Thunderbird 0.7.3 to 0.8
rename ~/.thunderbird to ~/.thunderbird.save
pacman -S mozilla-thunderbird
start mozilla-thunderbird
create just a normal account, that thunderbird creates a default profile with one mail account. Make sure you have selected not to use the global inbox!!!
copy ~/.thunderbird.save/default.xxx/Mail/*.* to ~/.thunderbird/xxx.default/Mail/
copy prefs.js from ~/.thunderbird.save/default.xxx/prefs.js to ~/.thunderbird/xxx.default/
Then you have to know all your passwords, because I dont know in which file they are stored.
Then you should have your emails back in the known format like in mozilla-thunderbird 0.7.3.
