When I go this page, http://nettuts.com/tutorials/html-css-t … framework/, the code snippets are blank unless I use firebug to turn off the font-family css tag for them. Anyone had this problem? Do I need to install a specific font?

I consider ttf-dejavu and ttf-liberation mandatory font packages. Install them, restart firefox and check the page.

Thanks for the replies but still not luck... (I tried installing all three packages, ttf-ms-fonts and dejavu were already installed)

The code snippets on the page that you linked to are visible here and the only fonts that I have installed that Firefox can use are ttf-bitstream-vera and ttf-dejavu.

Hmm do these settings look alright (or even matter):

I got to thinking about something after I posted in this thread. It seems like every time someone posts about fonts in Firefox not working, including Flash issues, I never seem to have the problem. And, as I stated above, I really don't have much in the way of fonts installed. I started wondering why that is. Then the thought occurred to me that the difference may be that I un-check the box 'Allow pages to choose their own fonts instead of my selections above'. As an experiment, un-check that box and see if the text isn't missing anymore.

Haha, that was easy. Now I'm thinking to myself why I didn't try that before (I think because I thought it should work with that still checked). Anyways there acutally isn't that much of a difference on pages so I think I'll leave it unchecked.

That's awesome! I'm glad that it's working for you. Now I'm really curious if this fixes peoples Flash issues. But, that's a subject for a different thread...

Just out of curiosity, if you check that option can you still view the code snippets on the page from the first post?

Yes. Everything seems to work as expected.
My font settings are simple, have been this way for a long time, and seem to work everywhere. Like you I'm using DejaVu for everything (Sans, Serif, Sans Mono). I have all three size settings at 13, the above check box unchecked, and have the default character encoding set to 'Western (ISO-8859-1)'.
