xfce install problems

Hi.   I just installed xfce4 using the wiki guides and I've hosed my install.

I had kde3mod running fine but I wanted to try the new xfce 4.6.  I put ! in front of kdm3 in my rc.conf and rebooted to the login prompt.  After install I ran startxfce4 and it came up and ran fine at my monitor's highest res.  I couldn't get it to save 1280x800 in xfce settings when I hit apply running as root.

So I thought maybe i need a WM so I installed slim and added it to rc.conf.   Rebooted, now that loads and when I put my login name in it errors out with a login not allowed or something like that.  So slim login screen comes up and I can't alt-f1 or f2 to another terminal to remove slim from rc.conf.  Ctr-alt-bspace doesn't shut down X either. lol
So I'm locked out of arch.   Kinda funny but hey I'm trying new things.

Feel free to move this newb section.    Ideas please?
