"error setting MTRR", can't get X to start

I have a Sony Vaio VGN-C140G that I can't get X to start on. Have been using the Wiki for xorg.conf setup. No problems to speak of in Xorg.0.log. After "startx" the screen flashes like it always does going into X, then at the last second it drops back to the console prompt with the message "waiting for X server to shut down error setting MTRR (base = 0xb0000000, size=0x007b0000, type = 1) Invalid argument (22)".

Dmesg shows several "conflicting memory types b0000000-c0000000 write-combining<->uncached-minus" messages

If I pre-load /dev/mtrr I do not get the "error setting MTRR (base = 0xb0000000, size=0x007b0000, type = 1) Invalid argument (22)" message but still get X shutting down and still get the stuff in dmesg.

I googled around and it appears there is some bad interaction between this 2.6.28 (and .27) kernel, X (and drm), and the way mtrr is handled. I even tried just the simple vesa and still got the error. I guess there is no fix.

The weird thing is, earlier in the day I was able to launch X. I kept rebooting it while working on xorg.conf, and from some point it failed, never to work again.

This machine also works with Puppy Linux 4.1.2 using xorg. The kernel is 2.6.25 however, which according to my searches is before this problem turned up.

The chipset is an Intel 945GM. The last messages in the xorg log are

[drm] removed 1 reserved context for kernel
[drm] unmapping 8192 bytes of SAREA 0xf8039000 at 0xb7ab8000
[drm] Closed DRM master.

This is more a heads-up than anything. I'm guessing there's not a fix until a better kernel comes out. Back to Puppy for now...

Re: "error setting MTRR", can't get X to start

Post your xorg.conf and full X log, please smile
Can you use the vesa driver fine?

Did you Google your error? I'm turning up a lot of HAL stuff. Did you have hal in your DAEMONS list in rc.conf?

Re: "error setting MTRR", can't get X to start

OK, if you want...  smile   This is just the latest iteration of xorg.conf files I have tried, of which none work since yesterday morning. The references to Puppy are because I started with the Puppy xorg.conf and then modified it. Oh, I also tried those xorg.conf generators but wasn't getting anywhere so I went the Puppy route. See next post for a later version.

Google? I spent the whole damn day with google.

BTW, I tried using no xorg.conf at all, as apparently the defaults work for most systems in this latest version of xorg; however that did not work either.

On vesa, I'm a little shaky with that. I tried something there in the wiki, one of those xorg.conf generators (oh, yeah, it was hwd), that generates a version of xorg.conf that uses vesa, and tried that, which doesn't work. Or do you mean something entirely different than using xorg? If the latter, I don't know how to do that.

I don't know about HAL. I was just stepping my way through the Beginner's Guide and hadn't got to that yet. The Guide does not mention HAL. My daemons list is "syslog-ng network netfs crond alsa". Anyway, as I said, it did work for a while. I did not install HAL and then take it out again. It's almost as if some thing, a register or something, is not initialized and has been corrupted.

Maybe I'll dig into this HAL stuff.

Re: "error setting MTRR", can't get X to start

I found a how-to in the wiki about Sony laptops, and added some more to the xorg.conf file. Also cleaned a lot of extraneous garbage out of it. Here it is:

What is your kernel command line in grub?
I think I had a similar issue some time ago and read that the "nopat" option is supposed to help.

I compared both of our logs, and first, I don't if these are any leads to solving the case (no dev here), but I don't have framebuffer compression. Also I'm using UXA instead of XAA, composite is enable by default in this recent version of the driver (xf86-video-intel 2.6.3-3), xorg-server 1.6.0-3, and Hal 0.5.12git20090406.
Even though we're using diferent chips (they're actually pretty similar when it comes to it), it might help turning on hal, xorg-server (went to extra repo this month) and intel driver. I have no problems on graphics right now.

Re: "error setting MTRR", can't get X to start

Sorry if this solution sounds crazily off tangent but I had this exact same issue while trying to set up my friends machine with Arch, the MTRR Invalid argument (22) error. And after a day on google and going slightly nuts I traced it down to a completely bizarre what i thought unrelated item. ~/.xinitrc

Have you tried startx while logged in as root with your xorg.conf instead of your user? what happens?

Re: "error setting MTRR", can't get X to start

hey i'm going through a similiar issue atm right now too.  but the mtrr problem didn't seem like the primary issue to starting X for me it was not being able to find a screen, but i did get into X finally by copying the /etc/skel/.xinitrc into the users home directory and typing xinit  ( after modifiying the .xinitrc file to startup your wm (exec startfluxbox) )
startx = no go, xinit = in but on generic vid drivers?

Re: "error setting MTRR", can't get X to start

Try updating to xorg 1.6.1, it's out of testing i think.

Re: "error setting MTRR", can't get X to start

I just faced the same problem with xorg-1.6.1. I normally use OpenBox but this time tried to start KDE, which gave me this error. Therefore I started Openbox again and there it works, as usual.
I remember that I met similar problems from time to time with some earlier xorg versions (and Openbox)... But they happened randomly. As I use to hibernate rather than shuting down, I rarely need to startx and therefore I managed to live with the problem. However I couldn't access the text consoles.
Now with Openbox and xorg-1.6.1 everything has work fine up to now. I don't now whether the error I just observed today was related to the fact I has setup xinitrc to start KDE instead of Openbox or whether it just occured by chance...

Re: "error setting MTRR", can't get X to start

delete .xinitrc and you might get somewhere.

My empty xinitrc was causing X to fail starting on my samsung NC10

Re: "error setting MTRR", can't get X to start

I had the same problem when I did a reinstall a while back.I Had no .xinitrc in my /home

cp /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc ~/.xinitrc

That is what worked for me.

Re: "error setting MTRR", can't get X to start

I started having this problem with awesome too, though I've been using it for sometime. I can actually use X, but it's unstable.

Re: "error setting MTRR", can't get X to start

I think I know what your problem is?

I get the "error setting MTRR" thing too, but it doesn't affect whether Xorg starts or not. It's probably unrelated. Are you sure a window manager is actually getting run? If it isn't, Xorg does exactly what you described: flash a few times, then exit.

edit: Actually, probably not your problem, but meh.

Re: "error setting MTRR", can't get X to start

As I said, I can actually use it for a while, so yes, awesome is loading. smile

I just hope it isn't some kind of hardware malfunction.

EDIT: apparently, awesome is to blame. I've just realized that sometimes it segfaults when a new window is open or when a window sets itself to 'urgent'. So here I go again in the quest to the holy grail, ahem, I mean, to the best window manager.

Re: "error setting MTRR", can't get X to start

I got this error too and thought it caused X not to start. But creating a xinit.rc with:
openbox-session

did the job.
