I am using the Wiki (http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Lvm#Partition_disks) on an existing install. Here are the drives and partitions currently:
40gb IDE
- 5gb = mysql database
- 35gb = mythrecordings
320gb SATA
- 10gb = /
- 15gb = /home
- 3gb = swap
- 280gb = mythrecordings
500gb SATA
- all one partition
1. This part at "Partition Disks" (link above) confuses me:
Next you need to create a partition for LVM. Its filesystem type should be 'Linux LVM', so use a partition id 0x8e (filesystem type: 8e).
I don't understand that part, looking in Gparted I don't see any option to format to a "8e" filesystem, same with cfdisk
2. It recommends to have boot on a partition outside of LVM, so would I leave one tiny partition on one of the disks and just put /boot in there?
Thanks very much for any help

That's because GParted doesn't support LVM. In cfdisk, when you create a partition, scroll over to type, and it'll list all the types you can use. Type in 8E, default is something like 80 (or whichever one is swap).
And yes, you would leave room for the /boot partition outside of LVM.

Thanks Berticus!
I'm wondering too, it doesn't mention in the Wiki, but when I convert a partition with data on it to the LVM in cfdisk, will I lose the data (it formats)??
EDIT: Nevermind, saw that I must create new FS after I've partitionted to LVM
