Xmobar and the current keyboard layout

Has anyone so far solved the problem of displaying the currently active keyboard layout in xmobar?

I guess ultimatelly it can be written as a separate Haskell plugin, but is there a way to just write a simple script that can be called using the built-in Com plugin?
