How do I tell the program to search in a location different from the regular /usr/lib/kde4?
The thing is that I'm trying some things modifying the plugins and installing them to a different directory but digikam still checks on /usr
Any ideas?

There is no way to tell KDE to look for services in a different location. You need to set the KDEDIRS environment variable to the new location:
export KDEDIRS=/home/damnshock/kipi-stuff:/usr/ digikam
But I'm not sure if this will work anyway.
