I have bought a very small ultra cheap asus eeepc 701. I have installed arch on it. All went fine except this minor but irritating detail: I can't turn off the wifi card (but it works nevertheless). It is possible to turn off an on the camera or the card reader by writing 1 or 0 in a file in /sys/device/patform/eee... (I am on another system right now, so I do not have the exact name, but it is easy to find it that's not the problem). But there is nothing related to the wifi (in the original Linux/Xandros that it i shipped with the laptop there is such a file).

Have you tried to unload the wifi module? (I can't be more accurate, I don't own such computer)
Also, maybe you can install and run powertop while on battery, it gives advices to reduce your power consumption. Give it a try.
what goes up must come down

I have partially solved the problem by blacklisting the eee_laptop module. I can still turn on and off the wifi (as well as the camera, etc...) in the Bios.
