Hi all,
I have a DVD reader which I can mount and a DVD writer which I cannot mount.
I have tried to mount the dvdw using names from /dev by trial and error, but with none of them I was able to mount the unit.
any ideas?
thank you
santiagorf

try cdrom0

Whoops, this went to the wrong place
I've tried it thanks, but with no luck I don't know if it helps, but with the dvdr until I don't open the unit from the device notifying service I cannot see any file.

What is the output of ls -l /dev/{c,dv}d* ?

To know or not to know ...
... the questions remain forever.

If anyone saw my (now deleted) post - forget it! I had misunderstood the question!!
Back to the original ...
It should have shown up during boot - try:
dmesg | grep sd
or
dmesg | grep sr
or
dmesg | grep hd

I also have a dvd reader and a dvd writer.
/dev/cdrom = sr0 which is my dvd reader
/dev/dvd = sr1 which is my dvd writer
I use /mnt as the mount points and created two directories cd and dvd.
These are the fstab entries I use.
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cd iso9660 ro,user,noauto,unhide 0 0
/dev/dvd /mnt/dvd udf ro,user,noauto,unhide 0 0

Pluging in fstab the following lines, I have the same problem
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cd iso9660 ro,user,noauto,unhide 0 0
/dev/dvd /mnt/dvd udf ro,user,noauto,unhide 0 0
when I insert a dvd in both units the Device Notifier shows that there is a disc is in the dvd reader only

I always use cd and dvd, but that's just an example. You could use any name or path as long as it matches what's in fstab. In othe words, if you use the dirs, /mnt/cd and /mnt/dvd in fstab, they need to exsist. If they don't then you need to create them.
This might help you...

*chuckles*
According to your 'dmesg | grep "sd|hd|sr"' - you do not have a dvd-writer, only a reader which is on /dev/hdc.
You can use this in your /etc/fstab - as shown previously, all the /dev/cd, /dev/dvd, etc are but links to /dev/hdc where the _physical_ device is.
The different links (be it reader or writer) all eventually comes back to the same physical device - /dev/hdc
In other words - there just is no trace of your writer.

so what about the DVDw, might it be a kernel issue?
I have compiled my current kernel before I checked with the original one if I could mount all my drivers (my mistake ), so may be my new kernel has some problems recognizing the DVDw (I have checked .config several times, but there is nothing that might be causing a problem).
ps1: With ubuntu, I can use it, but I cant write DVD's (only in windows).
ps2: Does the fact that it is a SATA device does any relevance?

If you compiled a custom kernel, make sure you have sata support enabled, or reinstall the arch default kernel. Also might want to look at mkinitcpio.conf and make sure you have autodetect / sata, in the hooks line.
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Mkinitcpio
perbh is right, your system is only seeing the one device hdc. If your writer is sata it should be detected as sdx where x will be a, b, etc. If it's the only sata device you have, it'll probably show up as sda.
Have a look at here. may help

thank you guys!! after I recompiled the kernel with SCSI support, I'm now able to see my dvdr. here is a link where it explains my problem http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/kernel-config.xml
