I can't get bitlbee to connect to gmail in irssi

I've been going round in little circles trying to get bitlbee to connect to gmail in irssi. I've followed numerous tutorials, seen a bunch of different sites, and everything fails at an Authentication Failure message. I can connect to gmail from centerim, so I'm getting out on the network. Would someone please let me know what needs to be done to get this to work? By the way, I also tried the irssi-xmpp plug-in  to no avail.

Re: I can't get bitlbee to connect to gmail in irssi

I just followed these exact instructions and connected on the first try http://venefyxatu.freeflux.net/blog/bitlbee/.  Try changing your password temporarily if you've got some odd characters in there?  Remember your username is your fully qualified email address, not just the part before @.

Re: I can't get bitlbee to connect to gmail in irssi

Thanks, but it's not working. I tried both a false password and my regular one and both are throwing Authentication failure messages. My regular password may have characters that need to be escaped, but I'm not sure what to do about that. Where exactly does bitlbee store it's information? I can't seem to locate any configuration files outside of the normal one in /etc/bitlbee

Account info seems to be stored in /var/lib/bitlbee/* but those files don't seem to be plain ascii unfortunately.

Quick question them. When I query my account, it says 'password is empty'. Does your's indicate that a password has been set?

Re: I can't get bitlbee to connect to gmail in irssi

Mine also says password is empty.  Full output below in case it helps. (email backwards for the stupid bots.)

rsontech > account set 2
root > auto_connect = `true'
root > auto_reconnect = `true'
root > password is empty
root > username = `154nosr@gmail.com'
root > port = `5222'
root > priority = `0'
root > resource = `BitlBee'
root > resource_select = `priority'
root > server = `talk.google.com:5223:ssl'
root > ssl = `false'
root > tls = `try'
root > xmlconsole = `false'

EDIT:  I've also fixed my link above.  The author's permalinks seem to not be working.

Re: I can't get bitlbee to connect to gmail in irssi

Your link before just needed to have the period removed from the end...

From your output, you have the port set to 5222 and SSL turned off, but the server line has the port at 5223 and SSL on. And that works?

By the way for centerim, the port has to be 5223 and SSL on for chat.

What does your bitlbee.conf file look like?

Re: I can't get bitlbee to connect to gmail in irssi

Yeah, I saw the port and ssl differences too, but bltlbee goes out and successfully grabs all my contacts.  Trying to send a message just results in saying that the user is offline (I can't test beyond that because no one I know uses gchat or uses the chat in gmail.)

As for the link, I must be going blind tonight or something...

Re: I can't get bitlbee to connect to gmail in irssi

One thing that's important to note here, bitlbee's setting don't always take. For instance, account 0 is the only one that I have right now. I can't change any settings with account set 0. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Restarting the bitlbee daemon did nothing.

--EDIT--

I created a jabber account and it works. This is good enough, I don't need any of my G-Mail accounts to work.
