i have this old 500mhz box kicking around, thought I'd install Linux on it. is there any good way to stream music to it (possibly over an ethernet hub) to play music through it? i can't think of many uses for it and i've already got a seedbox going.

A music playing daemon for a music playin' computer. Perfect fit if you ask me .
I have a mediaserver that doubles as MPD server. Mediatomb takes care of the video streaming (yes, I know, totally unrelated).

Pulse audio chokes up on my 1.7ghz athlon system. I dont think it would do to well on 500mhz.
I +1 for MPD.... with icecast perhaps

Another +1 for MPD. Maybe with a web front-end like WebAMP

MPD + http://ampache.org/
Failing that just use anyother MPD client and connect it to your server.

Might be better for your network traffic to use sshfs or somesuch to mount your music folder on the music player, and use a media player on it to play the music rather than streaming.
