Installation Errors and no wireless connection [Solved]

During the first stages of installation i try to run dhcp but it comes up with:

Error
see /dev/tty7 for further information

alt+f3 to a new vc to try and access it, login as root and type the directory to get:

Error, permission denied

so:

su /dev/tty7

And the message says: Error, file not found   or something along those lines.
So, followign the beginners guide, i set up wlan0 following the instructions to the letter, and i can ping google succesfully. Hooray.
Then selected a mirror and went through the installation following the beginners guide.

Now after installation and rebooting im faced with the console again  (I assumed that was right, i didnt think i was supposed to get a GUI like Ubuntu or Fedora)
and follow the beginners guide again. Now i get stuck once more when trying to ping google to see if my wireless is working.

So i try to edit:

/etc/rc.conf  -Permission denied. When i 'su' it, i get the file not found command.
/etc/hosts

Same problem as rc.conf. Now aren't i logged in as root?? Shouldn't i have full access to everything? Wireless was working to download the packages in that part of the install so i assumed it should be fine.
The next thing i tried during install

iwconfig       -Didnt work. Not found again.
ifconfig wlan0 up  -See above.

What on earth is going wrong? Have i missed a package i should have installed? I just selected base and base-devel.
I configured all the configuration files as the guide told me to.

Gah. Help please?
