arch on compact flash

Hi there,

I want to install arch on an old computer laying around. I'm going to use an CF to IDE adapter and install arch on CF (I dont have an IDE drive to spare).
The thing that bothers me is that CFs have limited write cycles, so I want to mount / read only and remount it rw only when doing upgrades (1 month or so).
If I use tmpfs for /tmp and /var (and no swap) will I be able to mount / read only? (a script will populate /var and logs will be sent via network). Any other things to take care?

Thanks.

Re: arch on compact flash

It should be possible... but you would have to do the remouting once everything is loaded up (not in fstab) otherwise you will run into problems. You also might need to have /home on a writable partition you could use tmpfs for that.
I have a compact flash system running debian (its not i686 so no arch), the interenal CF drive is only 512mb, but I was able to stick a 2gb stick of ram in it, so the majority of things run in tmpfs for me and it runs quiet well.

Re: arch on compact flash

thanks.
i tried to mount / ro in fstab, i was expecting problems just like you said, but no, the system was ok, the usual stuff. until i noticed that in fact / is rw... so it's probably mounted rw in the initscripts...
looks like it's not that easy....

Re: arch on compact flash

You might want to look at unionfs. Its exactly that.
