It seems I've got a problem with openbox I've recently isntalled. (at least yesterday at xfce automount worked).
It doesn't automount usb devices (cd/dvd works like charm), what's more 'lsusb' gives no results about external hd.
Dmesg gives output about new usb device:
usb 1-4: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 38

Any tips?

Hi, maybe that's two separate issues because openbox is not a desktop environment but just a windows manager which only has to deal with drawing them. You need additional software to manage mounting devices, as kwikdisk does in KDE.
I found a good presentation and some ideas about devices automounting at Ubuntu's wiki: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Openbox.
About the lsusb issue it's weird because obviously the driver is loaded and recognize the disk as it the device has been created in /dev. Why it's absent in /proc (what lsusb looks into) is beyond my understanding.
Does mounting the partition(s) on sdc manually work ?
Edit: sorry I didn't read carrefully enough: in your title you precised that you're not using openbox as standalone but with xfce. Does the device at least appears as unmounted in thunar ? If yes can you launch thunar from a terminal to see its output whe you try to mount the device ?

Can't find it in /dev (I guess i'm supossed to look for additional sd* entry) and it doesn't show up in thunar either (=> can't mount).
I use standalone openbox with xfce4 apps like thunar and thunar-volman (afaik it's similar to kwdisk + it works with cd/dvd doesn't it? ). I hope somebody can help me, because I transfer data thru usb devices pretty often.

It's a bit weird. What fixed it was adding udev rules with automounting (I dunno how come xfce mounted it and openbox didn't). I must have messed up something.
