gnome-settings-daemon doesn't start on login

Since I installed the open source ATI drivers a couple of days ago, I've been having problems with the gnome-settings-daemon.  None of my UI settings load properly, and I get this error message when I open the Appearances menu:

Unable to start the settings manager 'gnome-settings-daemon'.
Without the GNOME settings manager running, some preferences may not take effect. This could indicate a problem with Bonobo, or a non-GNOME (e.g. KDE) settings manager may already be active and conflicting with the GNOME settings manager.

If I run the daemon manually, everything works fine.  It's just a pain.

I found some solutions on the Ubuntu forums, but nothing seems to work.  Help!

I find it a little hard to help you on this since you have not said what kind of DE or WM you are using. What kind of solutions do not work? Maybe a link to the thread/threads. How do you run gnome-settings-daemon at startup?

Re: gnome-settings-daemon doesn't start on login

Well, I'm using GNOME, and the settings daemon normally starts at login automatically.  It's programmed into the "Sessions" menu and is needed to save the appearance settings from one login session to the next.

Here are the posts I've looked at already:
