Hello all
I installed Arch on my netbook after a friend quite strongly attempted to convert me from Ubuntu. I quite like it so far, but I'm having a few problems, cheif of which is currently:
I cannot get my iPod (or indeed any mp3s) to play under Rhythmbox. I am getting the red "Will not play" symbol, and it is skipping tracks until it eventually reaches any random one and freezes. I have a number of codecs installed including:
codecs 20071007-1
gstreamer0.10 0.10.22-1
gstreamer0.10-bad 0.10.10-1
gstreamer0.10-bad-plugins 0.10.10-1
gstreamer0.10-base 0.10.22-1
gstreamer0.10-base-plugins 0.10.22-1
gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg 0.10.6-1
gstreamer0.10-good 0.10.14-1
gstreamer0.10-good-plugins 0.10.14-1
gstreamer0.10-python 0.10.13-2
gstreamer0.10-ugly 0.10.10-1
gstreamer0.10-ugly-plugins 0.10.10-1
essentially I've tried everything that I've found on the Internet and it still isn't working.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Looking more deeply I've discovered that this isn't a problem with MP3s at all, even ogg files wont play. The output when I run rythmbox from the command line is as follows:
(rhythmbox:5710): GStreamer-WARNING **: Failed to load plugin '/usr/lib/gstreamer-0.10/libgstjp2k.so': libjasper.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
Xlib: extension "Generic Event Extension" missing on display ":0.0".

(rhythmbox:5709): Rhythmbox-WARNING **: Unable to start mDNS browsing: MDNS service is not running
(<unknown>:5724): GStreamer-WARNING **: Failed to load plugin '/usr/lib/gstreamer-0.10/libgstjp2k.so': libjasper.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Unfotunately, nothing in the rhythmbox page on the wiki is helpful.

According to pacman, libjasper.so.1 is owned by jasper, which is related to JPEG-2000 encoding, apparently. I doubt it's causing your issues, but try pacman -S jasper to see what happens.

I installed jasper and that error has ceased appearing, that however has not fixed the actual problem, unfortunately. So it still isn't working. Thanks for your efforts.

Have you tried it with Totem? It uses gstreamer backend as well I believe.

I tried it with Totem and it worked. So I uninstalled rhythmbox, did a full system update 'pacman -Syu' and installed rhythmbox again and it is working (to a degree). Unfortunately my sound isn't working, I'm not sure how long it hasn't been working for, but I don't think it is as a result of the update. And after the update my background disappeared (I realised that I should mention that I am using openbox).
As always with these kinds of things, you fix one error, and many more appear. Thank you to all who helped, if further solutions become available I will be very grateful.

Hmm.. I've been VERY fortunate with Arch, just installed it last month on a desktop and a laptop, no real issues to mention except a number of 'gotchas' concerning moving from Ubuntu (mainly stuff that is pre-installed on their Gnome but isn't part of Arch's default Gnome).
Concerning sound problems, I guess the ALSA section on the wiki would be your best bet. Sorry, no idea at all about OpenBox.
