Hello there
I recently swaped to xf86 from catalyst because of all the stuff going on lately ...
As you can see, I own a X1900XT ati radeon. I uninstalled catalyst , catalyst-utils, and then installed xf86-video-ati , libgl and ati-dri. However, from now on , some games like xmoto and urban terror run really slowly , although xmoto is 2d, while others go smoothly (like frozen bubble). On top of that, I can't enable compositing in kde4. Direct rendering is enabled.
Can anyone help?

I don't believe any of the open source ATI drivers support hardware acceleration. You're either going to have to attempt to convince Catalyst to work for you (Good luck.) or get an nVidia card instead.

You card supports 2d/3d acceleration with the open source drivers, but don't expect to get the same performance in 3d especially compared to catalyst. The new xserver-xorg in testing includes new DRM and ati driver, maybe it improves the performances a little, but probably doesn't as all the work goes to the r6xx/r7xx branch now from the ati devs.

Sadly, ATI cards suck under Linux.

There is other hardware out there that sucks under Linux too.
The day Microsoft makes a product that doesn't suck, is the day they make a vacuum cleaner.

But if they tell you that I've lost my mind, maybe it's not gone just a little hard to find...

Lexmark printers, for example?

I Think that you should experiment with the options that "man radeon" suggests

There must be something wrong in your config etc. I have Ati x1600 and Urban Terror worked* perfectly for me. KWin effects work brilliant too. Sometimes, however you have/had to disable some effects (bloom in Open Arena), because they can cause huge slowdowns when using Open Source Ati drivers. Btw. nvidia is not perfect - slow 2D, hard lockups.
* probably after upgrading to xorg-server 1.6.1 game is unplayable, because of graphical glitches everywhere and almost everything (objects, fonts) is black...
EDIT:
* After restart problems gone

Hi, i also have X1900XT and had some problems with getting composite to work in KDE with xf86-video-ati. I installed radeonhd instead and it's working better. the "only" problem i have now is random freezes in kde. i have no idea if it's radeonhd, my xorg.conf or kwin's fault. i will try to figure it out tonight :]
i havn't heard anybody else having this problem so i think radeonhd might be a good choise for you.
