No device detected (nvidia)

I'm having trouble getting my nvidia card to work with the proper drivers. I can run x11 fine with the driver set to vesa, but I'd like to benefit from hardware acceleration.

I installed xorg, then nvidia-96xx(I'm not exactly sure this is the correct driver, but I do have an older card). After installing, it mentioned the module not being found in /proc/, and requested that I turn off my xserver. It was not on.

Then I ran hwd -xa, and replaced "nv" to "nvidia" in my /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. When I attempt to 'startx', it warns that there are no devices found.

lsmod will tell you if nvidia is loaded if not put it /etc/rc.conf module section<better < or run modprobe nvidia

According to the wiki (http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NVIDIA) and nvidia documentation (http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/L … dix-a.html) your card WAS supported by the 71.86.xx driver.

No longer since Xorg 7.4 according to this: http://www.archlinux.org/news/424/

Thanks, installing the old driver was the solution. When I run glxgears to test the graphics, I get the following output

glxgears
Xlib:  extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
Error: couldn't get an RGB, Double-buffered visual

glx IS enabled in my config file. I added a section to disable compositing(saw this fix on the ubuntu forums), but that didnt work either.
