X wont give widescreen resolutions [Solved]

I recently did a pacman -Syu and got a new version of X, and when I rebooted I got a 1024x768 screen (before I was on 1680x1050). I have played about with xorg.conf and found that it seems to be widescreen resolutions which do not work, and it skips through the resolutions listed and displays the first one which is not widescreen. As nobody else has posted anything about this (as far as I can tell) I assume I have done something wrong. Here is my xorg.conf:

Re: X wont give widescreen resolutions [Solved]

I have had a look and think I might have found something (although I don't know what it means):

(II) NVIDIA(0): Assigned Display Device: CRT-1
(WW) NVIDIA(0): No valid modes for "1680x1050"; removing.
(II) NVIDIA(0): Validated modes:
(II) NVIDIA(0): "1280x1024"
(II) NVIDIA(0): Virtual screen size determined to be 1280 x 1024
(WW) NVIDIA(0): Unable to get display device CRT-1's EDID; cannot compute DPI
(WW) NVIDIA(0): from CRT-1's EDID.

Should I paste the whole thing?

Re: X wont give widescreen resolutions [Solved]

Is your display a CRT or LCD? That log refers to a CRT. Maybe it thinks your monitor is a CRT for some reason? Paste the whole thing. That might give more hints as to what is going on.

It's an LCD monitor, but using a VGA cable; I always thought that X always treats anything connected with a vga cable as a CRT monitor? I may be wrong.

Thanks

No, I don't think you are wrong. I run my displays of DVI. Haven't used VGA cables for a while.

For some reason X doesn't think the monitor can display 1680x1050. Not sure what to do about that. Maybe someone else will. Sorry.

Re: X wont give widescreen resolutions [Solved]

Hey, I fixed it! Using a rather unorthadox method, I admit:

Unplugged the VGA cable from the back of the computer
Restarted X using Ctrl-Alt-Backspace
Plugged the cable back in
Restarted X again (monitor had gone into standby) ...
...and got 1680x1050.

After a reboot the resolution is still there. smile

The thinking was that without a monitor X could not refuse to give the resolution I wanted. I dont know if this is what happened, but it works now! And I have no idea why the problem does not come back when X starts up again.

Thanks anyway to mikesd xD

Re: X wont give widescreen resolutions [Solved]

Just out of curiosity: Did the Xorg.0.log display messages change?

And, please flag this thread SOLVED (edit your first entry).

To know or not to know ...
... the questions remain forever.

Re: X wont give widescreen resolutions [Solved]

I have now switched to using a DVI cable and don't have the original VGA one, so I'm afraid I dont know if the Xorg.0.log changed or not while the VGA cable was there. Sorry :S
