Still trying to minimize use of System Resources on Laptop:Open/Flux

I am still trying to minimize the amount of packages installed on my laptop while having a functional desktop...Right now, here is a screencap of my current desktop on my laptop: http://fc06.deviantart.com/fs43/f/2009/ … Kyogre.jpg (programs running: gnome-panel, parcellite, exaile is replaced with audacious, pcmanfm, and midori is replaced with firefox *somewhat ancient screencap*)

...I want to maximize my screenspace while still having an easy to use desktop. Currently, the system uses 100 MB out of the 312 MB of RAM it has when idle....would using Fluxbox and its panel maximize the screenspace of my laptop and cut down the use of system resources?

Re: Still trying to minimize use of System Resources on Laptop:Open/Flux

My setup: http://i42.tinypic.com/1z65pu0.png

Openbox (formerly Compiz, latest Xorg isn't playing nice)
Tint2
Conky
PCManFM
Firefox

I have almost no wasted screen space without using a TWM and with Pidgin/Sonata/Firefox/KildClient/PCManFM open it uses ~350MB of memory (keep in mind my video card is integrated), and I've lost nothing in terms of usability.

Ah...but the laptop I'm using has about 312 MB of RAM and 1 GB of swap. I wonder, do you use PCManFM to manage your desktop?

*is also waiting for fluxbox users input on scenario*

Come to think of it...are there any more tabbed window managers, besides Fluxbox? The resolution on the laptop is only 800x600.

If I didn't have the shared memory, it wouldn't be using nearly so much, anything that's taking video card power is eating my system memory. By itself I doubt I'd be much over 100, if at all. And that would be mostly Firefox.

And no, PCManFM is just my filemanager, which I adore thanks to its proper rendering of icons and tabs.

Ah. I use PCManFM to manage my desktop and as a file manager big_smile...:P Screen is still too small than liking, which is why I am wondering if there are any tabbed window managers.

Re: Still trying to minimize use of System Resources on Laptop:Open/Flux

Yeah, Fluxbox in my netbook uses less than 20 MB when  it start session. With networkmanager applet + gnome-power-manager + gdm + screensaver + tracker daemon + conky, fluxbox uses ~ 110 MB in  this moment. For example, now i have running firefox+ leafpad + terminator + pidgin + thunderbird + listen, and the ram usage is 310 MB.  If you want save ram usage, you can change gdm for slim, deactive tracker daemon and conky, etc.

With my netbook's resolution 1024x600, my fluxbox looks like this:

Tab option of Fluxbox is very functionally, looks like this, an really save space.:

You really maybe try fluxbox.

P.D. Sorry for my english xD

I almost wasn't going to post this since it seems like you are leaning towards a more GUI approach, but here's my setup (at least part of it) and even with around 15 tabs open in firefox and about 8 other apps running I'm still using less than 200MB RAM.

In regard to saving screen space, even if you decide to take the GUI route,  a tiling window manager (DWM above) might be the way to go.

Wow, apparently Fluxbox consumed less with the same apps open (about 20 MBish). I'm keeping it ^^ Only problem is the right click menu doesn't disappear O_____o

That's a bug in fluxbox. An old one. Have you tried openbox ? Or PekWM ? or Fvwm ? All of these are light and you may like them.
And to answer your previous question about tabbing, Fvwm and Xmonad can do it, although XMonad is a tiling wm.

it is annoying... I ended up using the windows-key to toggle the menu, other advantage is you can access it from anywhere:

115  :ToggleCmd {RootMenu} {hideMenus}

but in reality, I never use the menu - shortkeys made it obsolete...

Either you have a small list of actions you need or you have a buttload of shortkeys.

Re: Still trying to minimize use of System Resources on Laptop:Open/Flux

If you want to save screen space, you might want to try a tiling WM like wmii or awesome.  They also tend to be really lightweight.  I am using wmii right now with  6 windows open; it is using 1mb of ram.

Ah...I don't really like tiling window managers that much though. They make my brain combust X_x...it would be nice if there were other tabbed floating window managers other than Fluxbox.

Pekwm does tabs, and is floating. It's far more configurable as well, in my opinion.

/offtopic:

Either you have a small list of actions you need or you have a buttload of shortkeys

firefox, thunderbird, openoffice, thunar, sonata, pidgin, gimp, transmission, three netcfg profiles and a workspace with terminal for the rest - suits me just fine!

@SamC: Ah. I will try Pekwm on both my desktop computer and laptop then. Some of the themes for it look interesting big_smile

Re: Still trying to minimize use of System Resources on Laptop:Open/Flux

Greetings,

Have you tried right clicking the titlebar of your fluxbox menu? That closes it instantly for me... Just a thought, not sure if you are even still using this...

Re: Still trying to minimize use of System Resources on Laptop:Open/Flux

My suggestions are going to echo others for the most part, which are fluxbox & pekwm.  Pekwm is pretty cool if you can get your head around key chaining.  I haven't managed to do that yet but its an interesting concept.

As for light useage, JWM is the one I am favouring at this time.  Fuscia has a thread on it & the arch wiki is very good for it.  I'm not an OB fan but if you can handle JWM's xml configs you'll do fine with OB, too.
