Getting rid of the system beep (pcspkr disables sound)

How do I get rid of the system beep? If I block pcspkr from rc.conf my sound is disabled altogether.

It's a ThinkPad T500 laptop.

Thanks, but that module is not loaded. I tried setting it in rc.conf, but it had no effect.

Put "setterm -blength 0" in your ~/.bashrc
Also put "xset -b" if you want the awful X terminal beep to dissapear

Yes, I have ALSA.

Wrath, thanks. But I prefer a "global" solution, if you understand what I mean. If I can't find one, I'll give your suggestion a go.

Yeah but still. It doesn't quite seem to be "the right way".

Can you post the relevant parts of your rc.conf?

If your using alsa, it should be in your alsamixer....   why not just mute it?

(I know... every once it a while alsa gets cranky and unmutes it, resulting in a good startle.)

I don't think it's in my alsamixer.

For the record, it's pcspkr and snd_pcsp.

Dashes work as well as underscores when dealing with modules.
