xorg 1.6, nvidia brokenness w/ dual monitors [SOLVED]

Hi,

I upgraded this past week to xorg-server 1.6.1-1, nvidia 180.44-1, and kernel26 2.6.29.1-4.  When I rebooted today I found a few things are broken:

I have a laptop and external monitor dual screen setup where each screen is a separate x screen, as setup by nvidia-settings.  After upgrading if I hold down any key for half a second or more (to trigger key repeat), my display on both monitors goes black and my mouse and keyboard stop responding (can't switch terminals, can't kill x...).  Resuming from xscreensaver also triggers this same problem.

Another oddity is that when I move my mouse cursor from one monitor to the other a lingering "copy" of the cursor stays on the monitor I just move away from at the transition point to the other monitor.

If I physically disconnect my external monitor (w/o changing xorg.conf) X displays none of the problems listed above.

My xorg.conf is below.  Most of it is probably not useful, although I should point out that I have input hotplugging disabled w/ AutoAddDevices false:

Re: xorg 1.6, nvidia brokenness w/ dual monitors [SOLVED]

have you looked at /var/log/xorg.0.log for warnings and errors?

you need to get rid of ..
    Load           "type1"
    Load           "freetype"

If you want independent X screens you need to get rid of..
    Option         "Xinerama" "1"
or change "1" to "0" or "false"

For two screens you should only need two device sections and you have three.

Alot of people are having good results with a minimal xorg.conf with the new xorg-server. I can't really say too much about it as I still use my xorg.conf, although I could probably cut it down quite a bit.

It looks like your xorg.conf needs a lot of tweaking. Or you could just delete most everything in it and let autoconfig do it's thing. Then just add little by little till you get everything working.

Not sure how much it will help because i'm not using a laptop, but rather a desktop, but here's my working xorg.conf set up with nvidia and three seperate X screens.

Re: xorg 1.6, nvidia brokenness w/ dual monitors [SOLVED]

I have the same problem. Its a Xorg bug tied to xinerama. You should run your setup in twinview mode till its fixed.

Re: xorg 1.6, nvidia brokenness w/ dual monitors [SOLVED]

I was under the impression that Xinerama has become deprecated in the last 6 months or so? Ended up just using separate X screens on my laptop.

Re: xorg 1.6, nvidia brokenness w/ dual monitors [SOLVED]

Leigh: Thanks, I cleaned up my xorg.conf (ending up making clean one w/ nvidia-settings) according to your suggestions and have no errors in /var/log/Xorg.0.log anymore

Bestiapeluda/ngoonee: I used Xinerama originally in order to get multimonitor support working w/ xmonad.  I tried switching over to twinview using nvidia-settings and now everything works as it used to!  The last time I used twinview it stretched my logical monitor across both displays, but now it's behaving like the separate x screens setup I had before.  I'm really confused why this is so, but it seems to work fine so I guess I'm happy.

Thanks for the help everyone!

Re: xorg 1.6, nvidia brokenness w/ dual monitors [SOLVED]

You're welcome. I use separate X myself, different resolutions on my monitors and I hate stretched wallpapers in Gnome. But I understand mine is a corner case, and may be switching to TwinView (recommended method anyway) pretty soon.

Oh, please remember to mark [SOLVED] smile

Re: xorg 1.6, nvidia brokenness w/ dual monitors [SOLVED]

that's good news. Glad you got things working. I'm also going to be switching to twinview since I've read about it working really well with nvidia and still acting like independent screens. It will be nice being able to move apps from one screen to another for a change. smile

Re: xorg 1.6, nvidia brokenness w/ dual monitors [SOLVED]

A quick question for Twinview users - the only thing (besides ugly desktops) that's keeping me from switching back is the non-availability of tools to lock your mouse on a single monitor - does anyone know how to accomplish that in a TwinView setup? These are useful for full-screen games, of course, and I use a self-modified version of mouse-switchscreen to accomplish this on separate X, but the method they use wouldn't work on TwinView.

Afraid I don't know of any tools to lock the mouse though.  I still reboot into Windows for most of my game playing tongue

Re: xorg 1.6, nvidia brokenness w/ dual monitors [SOLVED]

smile I remember doing that for a while. Got tiring, since part of the reason I went to Linux in the first place is to avoid all that endless throughout-the-day rebooting. Nowadays I moan about boot times that almost hit a minute with a full graphical desktop, a time I'd have been very very happy with back in the day with XP. Talk about progress.
