so i noticed today that there were 193 new packages
i ran pacman -Syu and everything was going fine so i started wathing a movie with vlc
the next thing i know my screen goes blank, at first i thought it was just my screensaver but then slim poped up asking me to login
somehow fluxbox logged out on its own in the middle of the updates (im not sure if it was still in the downloading stage or if it started installing yet)
so i logged back in and ran pacman -Syu again
(it still said 193 packages availabe)
this time it gave me an error (i sometimes get this error so i figured it was nothign to worry about so i just removed the file)
[root@myhost ~]# pacman -Syu
:: Synchronizing package databases...
error: failed to init transaction (unable to lock database)
if you're sure a package manager is not already
running, you can remove /var/lib/pacman/db.lck
[root@myhost ~]# rm /var/lib/pacman/db.lck
then i tried again

It's save to do a 'pacman -Sf xorg-server' to resolve this issue.
After that, pacman -Suy should run fine.

well...
i broke it (the first time ive broken my arch install in about 8 months)
i dont think its because of the xorg-server though
when i rebooted, x refused to start
i took a look at Xorg.0.log but i didnt see any errors
i tried reinstalling xorg-server but still nothing
finally i figured out that the problem was the new xf86-video-intel driver because it worked when i tried vesa
so i removed it and installed xf86-video-intel-legacy and everything seems to be working fine now, except all of the colors seem bland for some strange reason
anyway thanks for all your help guys

oops I messed up copying and didn't preview. I edited the link, but it was just to instructions to do what hbekel told you.
Some cards don't work with the new drivers, so if you had problems but things work with the legacy that's probably the case, though I don't know about blander colors.

Here is the Arch announcement about this: http://www.archlinux.org/news/436/

yea i just had to play with the monitor brightness and contrast a bit, now everything looks great
i actually think the legacy drivers are working better then what i had before, i can play my games at highest settings now without lag
i could probably make the new drivers work if i try playing around with xorg.conf, i have GM965, but my games and videos are all working perfectly right now and thats really all that matters to me
Here is the Arch announcement about this: http://www.archlinux.org/news/436/
ahh.. i see, thanks

There is nothing to be 'discussed' here, I'm moving this to the appropriate subforum .
As for the pacman conflict: first thing you should do is check the frontpage to see if any announcement is made - and as Allan (and mcmillan) pointed out, this is the case here. In that regard, there's nothing unusual to it - it's the result of a shortcoming in pacman.
