Hi,
I just installed ArchLinux using the FTP method on my 32 bit dell latitude D 505 laptop. I installed xorg using pacman. I also installe xf86-video-intel. Then I installed hal and restarted it and finally when I write startx, it shows that X server is not running at all. I don't have Xorg.cong created at /etc/X11/ directory, either. When I type x and press tab, I can't see any command starting with xorg.
I installed Arch on my 64 bit desktop without any ptoblem.
My VGA for my laptop is the following:
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82852/855GM Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02)
And this one is for my desktio:
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82G33/G31 Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02)
There's something weird when I boot my laptop. It complains that eepro100 module failed to load. I went to rc.conf and put a ! in front of it. I don't know if it had anything to do with xorg. My assumption is that it was a network related module.
Anyone had the same experience?

The color is get messed up. For the first time, I could even login using gdm, even though nothing was visible.
After the first time, when I issue startx, gdm seems to be there, although you can't read anything and everything is locked. I have to press the shutdown button and restart the computer manually.

For some reason I reinstalled arch using arch-i686-2009.02.iso. After installed xorg using:
# pacman -S xorg-server xorg-xinit xf86-video-nv xf86-input-mouse xf86-input-keyboard
I found there was no xorgconfig command, only Xorg -configure can work (maybe due to the new xorg). Then:
# Xorg -configure
xorg.conf.new was created in /root. Due to the hotplugging problem, I added these to xorg.conf.new:
Section "ServerFlags"
Option "AutoAddDevices" "False"
EndSection
Then,
$ startx
I got into my LXDE.
Of course I have .xinit under my home with these in it:
exec startlxde
I guess your problem would due to hotplugging. So creat a xorg.conf and see.
