I'm trying to install Arch on a machine I've never had Linux installed on. X is just not working no matter what, on my nvidia 8600 GT. Here is my xorg.conf
http://mtsix.com/tmp/xorg.conf (sorry about the uploaded link, elinks can't copy & paste text)
I even tried the nv driver, and it's the same thing. One thing I noticed is that as soon as I do X -config /etc/X11/xorg.conf, the video card's fan becomes really quiet. I have no idea what that means.
What could be wrong?
Thanks.

Run hal first, add it to rc.conf to start it on boot.
Also, look at your /var/log/Xorg.0.log for hints.
The fan thing is normal, should run at full speed untill you load X, same as when you reboot windows and the fan is at full speed untill windows loads up. If its too loud and you are in VT you can try modprobing nvidia, it should shut it up.

If your screen just turns completely black when you start X it might be because X is running with a black cursor on a black background, or something to that effect. That happened to me on my previous install, and since it didn't behave this way the first time I tried installing Arch (ages ago) it fooled me into thinking that X wasn't working. I spent ages doing pointless troubleshooting, when X was in fact working all along. Try skipping directly to this part of the Beginners Guide and see what happens when you start xterm.
EDIT: typo.

Oh thanks! It was indeed the balck cursor on black screen case. Showing xterm made it work!
